We are still trying to have a bob each way as to whether we are rebuilding or challenging, both in our recruitment and what we say to the press. Most teams should and do try and build for the future and remain competitive but there are always some clubs who are a long way behind. Those clubs can't afford to be delusional. We've joined that list and we've been heading there for a while because of our inability to look ahead. However, we seem to be far too proud a club to admit it or at least unable or unwilling to come up with a way to sell it to the supporters.
A lot of the players we have brought into the club are still on the young side. However, I still get the impression that they are looked at as recruits that can plug holes for us rather than as players that will be there when we can challenge in the finals. We have far too many of them on our list and I even have doubts on their credentials in the short term. Year after year we spin the excuse of how thin the draft pool is and yet other teams manage to do okay out of it.
I get the impression we are stuck in a mindset in which we are continually trying to 'correct' the close losses of the previous season, as if we can improve in piecemeal fashion, all the while players are leaving or aging and the opposition is getting stronger. Even if we do by some tiny miracle we make it to 8th place, it will amount to nothing and it will just give us an excuse to do the same as we always do.
Pretty much this. The lack of honesty and direction from the club is astounding. But they still have this outdated mindset that if the team's not winning, we're not buying memberships, so we need to avoid a rebuild at all costs. There's more to it than that.
