He lost me by talking up an over-age smokey rated at pick 60ish to the point where we needed to use pick 19 in the space of a month.
He was always in the 18-30 range.
That's rubbish.
Well I'm convinced...
Pace, disposal, a consistent year of form; it read like Isaac Smith all over again and he was always going to be in the 18-30 range because of that.
There's nothing about his 2014 form that suggests he was a late bolter in the draft order, simply that the media wouldn't have a @#$%&! clue outside the TAC talk due to parents and coaches yarning at games.
We'll agree to disagree on this one. There is no way BB was considered a lock as a first rounder (or even top 30) until a week before the draft and Rogers suggested we had a massive hard-on for him. His possession numbers (plus volleyball background and light physique) didn't demand drafting high up but I can see how the overall skills package (pace, eye for goal, etc) is appealing. Normally you'd expect the likes of Freo and West Coast to be all over a stand-out WAFL prospect (Ballantyne at pick 20) but there wasn't one skerrick of interest from either in taking him before 30 which concerned me at the time.
More specifically, why wouldn't you want to add a talented 18 year old to our list which is already badly in need of young elite talent, especially in the midfield??? The "but we got Jaksch and Whiley" argument shouldn't get in the way of working out whether BB vs Laverde / Lamb / Menadue was a good pick for us in the long-term. As I said before, the recruiting staff will be judged on if this works out. Personally, I don't think we should pass on the best 18 year old available with our first pick (whether it's 9 or 19) but that's just a fundamental drafting philosophy thing for me.
Lamb didn't get taken until pick 32.
Menadue went at the next pick, 33.
We could have had either with our second round pick, but we obviously rated DVR higher, taking him at 28.
Laverde is the only question mark and from what I've heard he specifically wanted to be at Essendon* (a connection with the club, either a die hard fan or some family ties, dunno) and I think a few clubs passed him by because of that (nothing to stop him walking to them after his first contract).
If there's a player we should have gone for with 19, it's Hugh Goddard.
