Quote:
Carlton's head of recruiting Shane Rogers has quit the club on the eve of the 2015 season, a matter of months after signing a new contract.

Rogers, who was elevated to head of recruiting before the 2012 season, has left in the wake of Carlton's restructure of the club's recruiting and list management. It was well known in AFL recruiting circles that Rogers was unhappy with the restructure, which saw him reporting to the club's new general manager of list management, Stephen Silvagni...

So there you go.

That's mean but that's how I feel.

Good luck to him, he gave his all.

Someone on BF posted the news about an hour ago, before it broke.
Said he was sacked and given 6 months payout. Not sure what the truth is.

Didn't want to be #2 to SOS ?

Was the recruiting structure properly explained when SOS was brought in ?

I'm starting to think Southby is just a sock puppet for the club...

Also, bleh. Rogers clearly had minimal say in this year's ND picks (Smith was Wiley's favourite, Boekhurst was highly needs based via coach, DVR was another coach-influenced but had been a favourite of one of the other recruiters).

Then you've got his RD picks in Gowers, Walsh & Fields. I understand all of them, but I'm not a massive fan of the Walsh pick, and also not selecting a ruckman to develop. There was clearly some tension there in regards to when not to pull the trigger on a type, and Rogers doesn't feel comfortable with the current form or level of the scrutiny.

Hopefully for us that's because he's not up to scratch outside the talent ID component of his job.

Better this happen now in the Pre Season before the competitive games and scouting begins.

Based on feedback I was given from people within the industry who dealt with him professionally, I don't think this is a huge loss. An opportunity to join the modern game.

Will we replace him. Don't tell me SOS is going to be our chief recruiter.

Jimmae.

Sentence 1 I know nothing about so can't comment.

The next 3 paragraphs are total bullshit and you should refrain from sprouting stuff you know SFA about.

Does this mean we're getting Graeme Wright in, or extra responsibilities placed on SOS/McKay?

That guy on BF knows or has links to SOS. He has posted a bit about SOS and his intentions in the past...

Concerned that this shows how poorly organised we are. I wasn't happy with the decision to take Boekhurst with our first last year. No problem getting him but we jumped too early. Not sure if Mick had a say in that or not. My view (particularly when you are not in premiership contention) is that you take the best available kid. BB might be a gun player and an inspired pick but he was a 21 year old who 12 months prior struggled to get a game at WAFL level.

Last year, we drafted for need. Dangerous. Also wasn't rapt in our WA drafting obsession. Possibly that's where Hughes/Rogers best scouts were, dunno. What is wrong with Vic boys...

Someone asked about Bootsma. That was Hughes' call IIRC but Rogers supported it and had talked him up for his character and ability to spoil, closing speed etc. Rogers was a big fan. In fairness, Boots might have been a decent player if he wasn't a tool and did what he was told in relation to preparation and professionalism (which I heard he didn't). I don't think it was coincidental that Rogers and Hughes knew his old man from the Freo days.

I am not dancing on Rogers' grave. His loss is unfortunate and our handling of him was ordinary. I'd love to know the real story with the Geelong bloke a couple of years ago. Rogers decisions to take Menzel looks good and I am hopeful about Cripps (who has great qualities). As stated, Boekhurst might be inspired but I wasn't mad about the reasons. Our late order drafting has been nothing to write home about through the last few years (don't really count Buckley - he was always coming to us).

Cazz all I've said is that he was given a mandate to deliver some types in the ND, and he was made to work within that frame. That's minimal say for his role, but I can understand how you can take that to mean 'next to no say'. Wiley has openly stated that he coached Smith at U16s and was a fan, last week in fact, so to suggest he wouldn't be running through walls to have him called out in the 4th round is silly.

The rest is me reiterating SR's own words about his options in the RD, at least in the post-ND wash up, followed by my own opinion on those picks, as well as hoping that we didn't just shoot ourselves in the foot by firing a competent and capable employee (or allowing him to walk).

I mean if I'm having some sort of high-functioning hallucination and the words I see on the screen aren't the words appearing on your screen, by all means shoot me full of tranquillisers and send me to the loony bin, but otherwise come on everyone: we're all on the same team here.

No mention of a replacement/search for another recruiter.

I thought his picks have been very good. It's a relatively small % who haven't worked out, with many looking very good for the future.

Can't help but wonder what the real reasons are. Would seem the most likely would be the lack of autonomy and feeling like Carlton have been looking to replace him (poaching Hawks recruiter etc).

Hope things work out well for Shane. I think the recruiting he has been involved with for the last couple of years is setting a good foundation for the club's next 10.
