I'm more than happy for people to get excited by the Teletubbies at the bottom of their personal gardens (as deluded as I think they are) and I have a large amount of sympathy for those who feel that the commercial world of late capitalism is infringing on their social comfort zones but the idea that we should build a fence around a specifically Christian public holiday in a country that should be proud of its multicultural credentials is essentially crap.
We have one its Easter... and ANZAC day is a fence around sacrificing people in futility for war.
Most people dont like war... thats why they always advertise for young people to join in the army / navy / airforce for good money and dont tell talk about war....
and we have a tiny army anyway....
why dont they advertise joining the military by showing us peoples legs being blown off.. or running through all those names of soldiers killed in afghanistan.. with photos of the a good chunk of young people coming back without limbs and say "Join the Army for some adventure"?
People arent warmongers my nature and as a demographic its a very different bunch of people that were in Turkey during the Great War... so why celebrate it ?
If we keep changing traditions of the nation each time a demographic changes... pretty soon the main holiday will be Chinese New Year .. i dont have any problem with that by the way....
But i still reckon a huge chunk of the population celebrate Easter
And its the only non corporate ruined day.. so why change it?
One thing is for sure .. ive never heard Buddhists or Muslims say it should go....
Just people with other agendas....
