Depends who you talk to, doesn't it.
We should have consolidated throughout that period on a solid list. We didn't. That's why we currently have such a discrepancy between best and young players.
I'd say the responsibility for that falls to the man whose vision for success was pursued. That'd be the senior coach of the time.
Now, the man charged with cleaning it all up is wearing considerable fan driven criticism.
Ratten coached for the now, with little regard for the future. Malthouse has to juggle both.
You should read the clubs strategic plan before you go off half cocked Cheesy ol' chum.
Who was driving the bus?

Ratt's was told he had a top 4 list and just to remind you.................
This is from "The Blue Print" Strategic Plan
Strategic Objective 1:
PREMIERSHIPS
• Sustained success
• Including winning our 17th premiership
•
Leading to winning two premierships by 2015.Looks pretty clear Ratt's was under a fair amount of pressure for immediate results.
He had the time and resources to build a list capable of doing that. Other clubs got and continue to get better results with less of both.
He had carte-blanche, "Cimmsy", and left us in the middle of nowhere.
As senior coach I'd reckon most everything he deemed necessary to achieve success, whether it be recommended to him by others or devised himself, was granted in pursuit of that success. A trip to Dubai for a training camp, hiring different people, recruiting in a particular way... The board, for all their faults, would e acquiesced to his wishes.
The success anticipated didn't come to pass, whether we overstated the abilities of our list or went as far as it could, therefore he wears the responsibility. Just as Mick will if we don't improve.
Encouraging thing is Mick wasn't hired after spells assisting at Melbourne, following a stellar stint in charge at Norwood. Not the Norwood, mind, the one in Ringwood.
