Kicking is a skill that can be developed. Why can't our coaching staff teach our players to kick? That and desire would go along way to fixing our side no matter who pulls on the jumper.

You have hit the nail on the head. Our kicking has cost us 2 games this year, Melbourne and Richmond. You could also make a point in round one when we were 7 goals 8 to 5 goals 1 we should have 6-7 goals up and the result may have been different too. I dont know why our disposal is so bad and why we cant kick straight for goal, i guess going around the boundary doesnt give us shots from in front.

We have the worst kicks in the AFL because Wayne Hughes selected them, every other team can spot this except Wayne and his team, surely when they were compiling the player profiles they would have identified those that cant kick but apparently not. Ratts may have said it doesnt matter because he couldnt kick either.

If it were possible to teach players how to kick then every club would have 15-20 Daniel Rich's, lets not get mixed up with a standard shot at goal from 30m but the precise weighting of a 30-40m pass to a running player with an opponent on his tail comes natural and is something very few of our players are capable of doing.

Ratts couldn't kick? He'd still be more proficient than most AFL players on his non dominant side.
By all means bag the bloke but lets not make stuff up to do it.

the only inside word i have is the powers to be love him and respect him and believe he will restructure this club's list.. so he wont do that in one more draft obviously.
The thing is he has been telling the board regularly where were at. Some of the board members were overzealous in their hope for success. He has been consistently the most grounded of anybody in our football department. Some were very 'Bullish'
His assessments of lack of leadership... introverted .. mentally weak.. have all been spot on.

So what do they want ?
Another sacked coach.
Bring in another untried Coach.
Go through a rebuilding of our list with a coach who is also learning on the job.
We've been through this all before with Ratts.

I have no doubt once new President and Board is in place MM will have his contract extended and so he should.

The List is the issue. This mess we are in is the result of 10 years of the worst recruiting, list management and development in the league.

We simply don't get it. We still think we can buy Premierships.

Recruit, Manage and Develop. We need to constantly keep improving.

Last year was a start. Cripps, Docherty, Giles & Holman were good moves but it could of been better.

I very much doubt that, i'd imagine there would be more dissatisfaction if we continually chop and change coaches every 3 years.

All i know is that with the situation we are in at the moment i'm happy to have someone with experience at the helm, a rookie type coach would have been well out of his depth at this time.

We need some stability, all that chopping and changing coaches achieves is to allow the players to avoid taking any responsibility themselves.

We haven't been through it for a long time - Pagan appointed with the cheque book; Ratten appointed on the basis that ''The game doesn't protect itself from over-zealous board members,'' Clarkson added, ''who become fixated on the idea of a club legend or a star player becoming their coach with no experience.'' Malthouse appointed with the cheque book.

We haven't been through a careful, considered process to appoint the coach since Brittain - one of the most important appointments a club can make and Carlton do it in a haphazard manner.

Learning on the job? Ken Hinkley did ok in his first year - they surrounded him with plenty of experience too.

Chris Scott won a premiership in his first season.

It can be done but unfortunately due to Carlton's arrogance and stupidity it isn't considered.

While I don't agree (or at least think the jury is still out) that Mick is the ultimate problem with the on-field nosedive we've seen (I point the finger at the players and poor/inexperienced assistants brought in on the cheap) I agree that the process to get him in there was a farce, as it was with Ratts.

Rather than close-mindedly head-hunting one guy for months, I think we all would've much preferred a proper process to find the best person for the job, and to ensure that person is surrounded by the best people. If this process revealed that Mick was the guy, then so be it, but even then you'd have to weigh up the affect that his expectations (or demands, if you will) would have on other areas. Namely, the quality of support staff you offer him.

In our case, it seems we stupidly chased one bloke at all costs (literally) due to past glories and "marketing value", rather than considering that in modern football the "coaching team" is more important than "the coach". We put all our eggs in the Mick basket, and left nothing over to surround him with decent support staff (Laidley being a possible exception). Even if Mick is a freaking genius coach, when you've got guys like Barker still on the roster, there's not a lot you can do.

The issue that some posters aren't considering is this
Is MM past his used bydate as a coach
I think he is
There are many parallels between he and Pagan
Strong personalities who deep down don't take responsibility for their own actions and mistakes
That doesn't help build strong ties to your players
Don't think the players escape scrutiny in my eyes either because as a team they need to get rid of the soft cock mentality
But the overall thing I got from the F C show was it isn't his fault at all that the team is playing shit
Plus
He has surrounded himself with ex Collingwood colleges who clearly are failing in their job
MM got daisy to the club 7500000 a year over 4 years is a joke
Cameron Wood oh my god

In my view he has had it as a coach
He has clearly lost the players.
With the blowtorch on the club I am sure we will play better this week but once a coach loses the players you can't come back
Be prepared for more thrashings and more scrutiny

Bottom line Carlton board
Conduct a thorough interview process to get the best coach
It's that simple
I am sure Ken Hinkley could have done the same thing at Carlton with what he has done with PA

ok

but our players have never trained hard
ask eddie what he tells the players

blokes like yarran and murphy and gibbs have never taken themselves to the next fitness level
learnt from waite and lance etc

the guys that train hard it shows
walker
simmo
curnow
scotland
carrazzo
kreuzer
most of the others dont work nearly as hard

when waite and garlett were dropped it was as much about how had they work than the footy.

couple this with something like 21 operations to 17 players off season(i do not think this includes kreuzer and judd ) and a TOTAL lack of leadership... where blokes are finding it too hard to step up.
The other thing we have found is we have been recruiting too many guys that dont want it enough...
thry prefer t cruise through games than take the game on....
Plus our recruitment has been woeful which means we cant call upon blokes to stand in for underprepared players.
One way or another this will be addressed .

I don't think so, Ken Hinkley has a better list to work with at PA and the administration side of that club is much better than what ours is. The change in Port Adelaide's fortunes was not simply due to a coaching change.

People always like to take the name of the latest coach that is doing ok and say things like we could have had him if we had gone through a proper process. Keep in mind that Ken Hinkley had been passed up by more than one club that was going through the 'process' before landing the PA job. He wasn't PA's first choice either if i remember correctly.
