 There won't be another Smorgyland, but in my lifetime I envisage the Hawthorn Stand being torn down and a wellness centre of some sort going in next to the Legends stand. I see our Corporate Social Responsibility playing a large part of our future. I expect a basketball court will end up replacing the grassy knoll in the not too distant future and perhaps even a Kickstarter project and a few wealthy benefactors raising funds for a rejuvenated Gardiner Stand. Maybe even a neon 'Carlton Football Club' sign illuminating 24/7 at the entrance and a complete drainage overhaul of the ground all being in place before the start of the 2015 season. All these things don't require Justin Madden, but he's a good bloke and it'd be nice to see him at the footy more often...

Whilst I agree he isn't presidential material (by his own admission), the above description of his potential value is far to simple and dismissive IMO. His experience in managing dual stakeholders objectives and functions, both corporate or public, would be of benefit to any club board, particularly in the area of corp governance/accountability. On a side note, ongoing club success requires a long term venue strategy with vision, whilst no need for a Smorgyland, there's much more to it than simply drainage, signage and stand.

Read my post again...thst wasn't a description of his potential value. There isn't a great deal of value Madden would bring to the board room and corp governance/accountability certainly isn't on the list.

Given the requirement for ministerial responsibility and daily compliance with accountability processes, I'd say he be more than adequately equipped insofar as corporate governance is concerned. As the situation at Essendon* has clearly shown, having a director with formal Corporate governance expertise and qualifications doesn't always translate into a successful outcome.

Did you just defeat your own argument? Re: the first sentence...his staff do/did all of that.

It's no different to any typical board scenario. Director doesn't need to design or implement process him/herself, but rather oversee those that do, and give due consideration to effects of board room strategies and priorities in light of those principles.

I disagree with that wholeheartedly. A board sets direction.

..whether Madden is, or is not capable, i wouldn't know.. ....but i think any new prez is going to have a difficult time of it without a change of 'heart' across the entire board..

Yeah...Nah. Either Mark LoGuidice or Ryan Trainor will be President. You should probably get used to that idea.

..don't really know much about either of them, so not too fussed [currently] with either selection.. ..will reserve judgement until after a few years [at least] in the presidency..

....will either one of them be able to 'shake up' the board group-think..?.. ..and manage to bring about progress with some more freedom/authority..?.. ..or will they in effect be another 'facade'..?..

I think he would be an excellent choice as our next president.
Has enough knowledge to help us and direct us.
 from me.
