When required were the words I used. There are times when you do need to take a firm stance on issues and this can be done.
This is what I have been thinking about when looking at the main points of criticism towards MM by the so called pro Ratten group....I don't think they're pro Ratten but more so anti MM (for historical reasons), lack of process, because he got rid of Richo, and or anti Board.
I recall Blue Vain sharing the views of personnel who had worked under Malthouse he was privy to. Basically he said Malthouse is autocratic and it's his way or the highway. Others have suggested this is the main reason Eddie got rid of MM.
I like the stern and unwavering leaders who have a clear picture and path of the direction they should take. An organisation cannot go different ways in a splintered approach. That breeds chaos, and Carlton we have been chaotic and ad hoc for long enough.
I don't care too much of Camporeales views of Pagan or any of the other remaining leaders during the Pagan period with regards to his style . The players had obviously taken over the club and the board seemed to be weak and as a result the club wasn't going anywhere. The list was weak and the weak were all we had and therefore we allowed them to continue to be weak
Same as last year when some of the playing group seemed to have lost respect for Ratten and didn't play for him against the GC and Saints. They put in a weak performance which reflected badly on Ratten.
The players are employees and are paid to tow the line and perform at their best every game even when the club is tanking.
You see it doesn't matter whether its Brittain Pagan Ratts or MM if you haven't got the cattle and a deep list to perform a handful of players can bring undone any well intended and designed course a coach plans for their team.
New age, Old age, gen Y....look there's good ways to behave towards each other, but when an employee is not doing their best I believe firm action should be taken by the coach. Some players don't know if they will be on the list next year because of their performance this year. Fair enough. We need high standards.
Prior to the start of the season MM backed all the players to a start fresh and show what they have to give this club in its quest for the 17th flag. We have lost many games from a lull in concentration, a lack of endeavour and failure to play for the jumper as happened for Ratts against Port GC and Saints last year....last weeks first half against the baby Doggies a similar thing happened to MM.
I have a feeling there's a few bad eggs or over rated players on our list and they needed to be weeded out. There should be changes to the list. Those players will stand out in these last 3 rounds.
MM has been given a contract to get us to the top 4 and a chance at a flag within 3 years. He reckons he can. History will tell.
Last years brilliant grand final showed the world how important a good defensive game is in a GF let alone an unwavering commitment to contested footy for the full duration of the game. Looking at our list I think MM is right that many on our list will not give us what we need to win a flag. Nothing wrong with calling a spade a spade...and that's why I think MM is the right person to have judging the list and fixing our inherent on field and off field weaknesses.
