Well great insight Doc and good to hear that maybe we do actually have 1 person willing to put their hand up and go for it.
We have not seen or heard anyone willing to even discuss the president position of late.
It's up to the individual however to get the numbers and challange correctly. I have no issue with Mitchell or anyone else going for the presidency as long as the process is right and it's done in a diplomatic manner.
No blood spill, no in fighting just a good change over for the good of the club.
I'm sure Sticks and the current board wouldn't have an issue with that.
Surrey - I should qualify...in no way do I expect a man such as Harold Mitchell to 'assume' the Presidency. The time has long passed for anything like that to occur. It's a little sad - because there is no one waiting in the wings. No one. Richard Newton and Greg Lee would disagree with me, but what can they bring to the table that differentiates them from Kernahan? Nothing. The president of a football, in my eyes - is more than a figurehead. Much more.
We're entering our 150th year and the board will tell you that the club is 'working hard' and are in 'pretty good shape'. The same lines get trotted out by the same people. They've told themselves so often that they actually believe it. In reality - they have to deliver those lines for sponsors and supporters sake - but I'd much rather the waters not be muddied and they didn't speak in 'half-truths'. "We've chosen a path - we believe it's the right one, but there's a ways to go before we find out whether it is or not" is far more apt.
There isn't anything new coming out of Carlton. It's a stale football club. It breathes off of the fumes of past success. Those fumes only last so long before Carlton people disappear and only return with success. We now have woodwork supporters. Plenty of them. Like Richmond used to have.
And there's a real danger Carlton's risky funding model will soon be intrinsically linked to the Presidency. Regardless of Sticks staying another year or not, Craig Mathieson - nephew of Bruce - is on the Board and there's nothing to suggest he wouldn't have the numbers next time around...whenever that might be. One only has to look at other league Presidents to know that it's probably a good idea that they're successful in business (along with other good attributes). We can criticize Paul Little and David Evans all we like - but they're good businessmen. I wouldn't class Craig Mathieson as a good businessman. Would I invest in his company? No! The debt ratio is woeful!
Then again...float Carlton FC and I wouldn't recommend investment just yet. Speculative stock. Board of Directors doesn't fill me with confidence. Risky model in which to pay off debt. Needs to capatilize on its greatest asset which are it's supporters, but hasn't quite figured out how. And when it comes to Carlton, no one - whether they're involved at the top or not - can't agree on 'how' to make Carlton great again.
