Hang on a minute Keogh...
- Pagan and Ratten were both given marching orders with one year remaining on their contract.
- 'Getting rid of' the Pratts means losing $1.7 million per year in sponsorship alone. Not a wise move.
- You're right...the debt is of great concern, but they've undertaken to adopt a model (albeit a risky model) to relieve that debt and that's a decision they've got to live with. That debt was inherited debt mind you...let's not blame the current board for inherited debt.
If you want a reduction in the board (which I do), then Sticks needs to convince current board members like Gleeson, Clarke, Geminder, Fried and LoGiudice to stand down. They've run their race and I think each of these aforementioned gentlemen know it. This would leave 8 board members. Kernahan, Pratt, Newton, Fahour, Lee, Mathieson, Trainor and Sayers.
Then you ask Harold Mitchell (very nicely) if he'd consider coming on as a Director with a key role to Chair an 'Advisory' board. A group of Carlton supporting professionals viewed as incumbent board members who get a feel for the club at board level, don't have to put in the hours of a normal Director but meet quarterly and can hit the ground running when they do step up to be board members.
Andy Penn (CFO Telstra), Ian Herman (Managing Partner, Grant Thornton), Stephen Kerr (Vice President, State Library of Victoria; Owner/CEO, Public Relations Exchange), Mark Kerr (Director, Berkeley Consultants), Grant O'Brien (CEO, Woolworths) are such people.
I think this is a no-brainer. But I sense the current board wouldn't go for it.
