Not sure where to put this, but it's written by a mate of mine and despite being a North Melbourne supporter, he generally gets things right. Hopefully - this analysis is no exception.

 That's as good as anything I've read. Impressive and IMO very accurate!

Makes a mockery of the beer sodden offerings from Mark Robinson, and the other so called AFL football media experts.

...when they get desperate, they regularly steal Scotty's stuff. Remarkably, not only are most of his analysis' accurate, they're often done at 3am and/or when inebriated.

I nearly didn't read it because I thought it was something I had already read in one of the papers. I enjoyed it and I think it has a lot of truth in it.

I think Casboult is an important part of 2013. If he can take marks and get a reasonable conversion rate, it will make Waite and the others more dangerous as well. if he just keeps shanking his kicks he might as well go home.

I also note Walker's negative numbers on 2011 and hope he stays forward. he is super had to mark up.

FWIW - Scotty is writing up his analysis on the Bombers as we speak. I've seen a sneek peak already and like the Carlton one - it's good reading.

Good stuff. In my experience, aside from maybe a dozen or two outstanding exceptions, many so-called professional "journalists" are not as good as many amateur bloggers - and this is across the board from politics, society, sports, arts, modern 'culture', etc...... (even architecture!)

Only thing he missed is that Henderson can be versatile, I expect to see him at both ends.

oooh!

He would fit right in at the Herald Sun if it wasn't for the whole "accuracy" thing

Great read
Lets face facts. We don't have a great list with an aging midfield and a forward line requiring luck with injuries and improvement in kicking accuracy and defensive pressure.
Can the 1 to 20 gamers add the class we need?

And that Simmo has been arrested for holding up a Cobb & Co coach.

Sheesh, he knows more about Carlton than Ratten did (cue lots of sakc Ratten posts).

I look forward to reading his Essendon* forecast (as long as he reckons they're crap).

He certainly threw the stats around like Ratts did.

Good write up.

In short we need to keep our better players on the field. Defend better as a team and score more from our inside fifties from tall marking options .Also we need to improve our ability to score from outside fifty.

I thought that was a terrific write up by a non Carlton supporter.

I've been considering the upcoming season a lot, and a lot would have to go right (similarly to how lots of things went wrong last year) for Carlton to battle other contenders for the eight. And I'm not convinced yet that they're a top 4 side in waiting.

If we consider a 85% healthy list for most of the year, the biggest improvement I think will come from the back line. Laidler will be like a new recruit, and sad though it is that McInnes is not available (I really liked what he showed), the one I will most look out for is Simon White who looked to really improve in the back half of 2012.

I still have question marks over Tuohy (his best and worst is too far apart), Joseph anywhere near the back line worries me, and who will step into the Scotland role of general? Duigan perhaps? He's not quite as accomplished.

It really presents an opportunity for Henderson to be the extra tall that isn't always needed down back, however there's enough tall timber to reduce the Petries of the world destroying us.

If Gibbs moves into the midfield, then with a re-energized McLean and by all accounts a much improved Cachia, that's a rock solid core you have in there to add to the class of Judd, Murphy, Carrazzo and Simpson with the hulking Bell an up and comer and stints for Walker, Betts and Garlett around the stoppages.

Does it mean that Mitch Robinson is best used in a forward setup? His (sometimes self-reckless) attack on man and ball is something which could prove a boon in the forward setup. He could provide suitable assistance to big men like Casboult or Kreuzer or Waite as he's got the right attitude to be a solid chop out, can take a mark as a 3rd tall, and when the ball hits the deck nobody goes in harder...

A healthy list is one which is appetizing, and we've seen it all before where a well regarded team has had a most disappointing year only to come out breathing fire the next year. We just have to hope that's Carlton of 2013.

There's no reason why Richmond, as improved as they are with a superstar captain, should not be put the sword in Round 1.

We'd disagree with you there. Ratts (and he's not alone) was using the wrong stats. Even Teddy Hopkins will tell you that. Coaches are coming around to analysing the game a little differently but the importance is to get the stats right - deliver them appropriately - but not to get away from the basics too much. If you get the basics right - you'll be a good footy side. Our boys have been a little confused over recent years as they played in strict accordance with the Ratten gameplan - but in doing so, lost the basics and in some instances the creativity that got them to be professional footballers to begin with.

With Malthouse and Wiley - we can be assured the players will be given a role within the gameplan. They won't shy away from the stats, but they're more than likely going to have a different set of parameters by which to measure performance.

Your post didn't disagree with me though.

Moving on. As far as the lack of long goals go i see that as something that evloved under Ratts. At one stage we were getting too many "long points" as Ratts described them. Where we would either strain too much and miss or have the ball land just short for the easy rush. Ratts pointed to it as a problem at a number of pressers and then changed to instead of taking long shots we would work it to a position that had a higher % of scoring. Which then evolved to the pocket entries and press that frustrated many but used effectively by a number of the top teams.

Hopefully we can get some players into the 22 that can score long goals. It is something that we have missed since Fev was dispatched to the Bears.

Who fits the mould of a superboot at the club from a set shot? Can't imagine there's many (if any)
