I'm staying out of the assistants debate.
If someone posted on this board that at the start of 2011 we got M.Thompson as senior assistant, B.McCartney as a forward line coach, S.Goodwin as midfield coach, and J.Hird to move the cones most people would have been beside themselves.
On the other hand announcing that we got the likes the Sydney team ie John Blakey, Stuart Dew, Henry Playfair, Jared Crouch and Leigh Tudor would have been given a luke warm reception yet look at the difference in performance from both sides.
Then we had the whole David Teague was rubbish, David Teague is now a gun at West Coast saga. Matthew Lappin was hopeless with us, then when Collingwood were flying Matthew Lappin was a gun, and now the forward line is a shambles, he is oridnary again. Which is true?
Robert Harvey was by all reports an overpaid cone mover at Carlton, then when Collingwood had won 10 in a row and Sidebottom and Beams were flying, Scott Pendlebury was heaping praise on him, and now I'm hearing Collingwood supporters questioning him again.
It seems like the simple rule is: team winning, assistants good, team losing, assistants bad.
Judging senior coaches from the outside is difficult, but at the end of the day the buck stops with them so we have our say. Judging assistants is more difficult due to a number of factors, but most importantly how much of their influence is directly affecting the overall performance of their particular line?
I enjoy any comments from people who have 1st, 2nd, 3rd hand information on any possible additions, but if anyone is just make assumptions from media, their playing career, or if he's seems like a great bloke, or a flog then pull up a stool and join me on the sidelines!
