We (CFC) hang our hat on the fact we're the most successful premiership winning team. Most of which we bought.

Maybe instead of heading over to Real Madrid, a club where we probably already could already identify ourselves with. A club that perhaps couldn't teach us what we needed to know?

Instead, they could have looked at a club like Southampton and what they're doing to develop their own talent? Or look at a competitive club like Everton who manage success for years on end despite having a big payroll?

Or if they really wanted to make sense and learn something, head over to the NFL and have a good look at the ground up at drafting, salary cap management and success.

Pittsburgh, New England, Green Bay and NYG etc are perennially successful on and off the field.

It's like every thing CFC does is not overly thought out. Or would you disagree with that assessment?

Real is one of the biggest sporting organisations in the world, if we looked at it for training facilities that would make sense to me. If we looked to them for recruiting tips, that might be a concern.

Similarly, why would we look to Soton for developing talent? I dunno, do they have a youth academy that's acknowledged as world's best practice? They might do, I'm not sure. I'm not saying there's nothing we could take from some of the smaller clubs in Europe, but if you're going on a junket to learn things from other codes it's probably best to identify winning organisations (without meaning to be harsh to Soton).

I would agree with your armchair assessment that many things our club does are not well thought out. The view from my armchair is the same there. :P

Can't agree with that.

In the 80's we got some good players but we never "bought" a Premiership.

What we were however, was the leader in our field in attracting players, coaches etc. We were winners where second best wasn't tolerated and everyone (including players) knew it.

The best players were recruited and they were DEVELOPED and given opportunities.

Unfortunately we aren't anywhere near that anymore.

Channel 10 said Chocco linked to us as possible senior assistant.

I don't get it...last week the club couldn't put a foot wrong according to you. Now they can't do much that's right!   Make up your mind! Or sit on the fence! You've been here 5 minutes and you've contradicted yourself in most threads!

They are a bit slow these days Channel 10.

Sheehan went with that On the Couch last night.

Yeah southampton do have the best youth academy, they say, in europe.

With the coloured bit in quote, I guess that's my entire point. Thinking outside the square. Just going to the New York Yankess or Manchester United etc to see how they breed excellence mightn't be the best way to relate back to how they run the club back here under a different framework.

But identifying other clubs who have best practice in a certain field -- especially a field we have weakness in -- shouldn't be overlooked?

But yeah, the armchair advice is in full swing in here.

Advocating Ratten, is/ was hardly giving an endearing assessment of CFC as a whole. Especially of days gone.

I love the 5-minute bit. It was very stimulating.

Yeah, I go through phases with agreeing with it and not. My old man thoroughly believes we use to buy our success, and he's followed us since the early 60's ...

Yeah, the game has changed. Drafting, patience, salary cap ... they're concepts foreign to the days where we did dominate.

I liked listening to SR, he seems to be bringing a different approach based on the Geelong way of building a list and developing it.

Although. I'm not sure how well it would work at CFC because as Roos said, "We're a demanding club who's supporter base expect success and doesn't tolerate losing."

Those attributes don't really incorporate the patience side of development.

This.
Tomorrow night Tim Watson and Damian Barrett will be racing to scoop each other on the exclusive news that Channel 10 heard from someone else that someone else said that maybe somebody made up something but if we say it on TV it will sell as news.

Braithy the old we bought our premierships is all crap.

We recruited, we had a great zone in the golden square and we went after coaches
we were ruthless
we demanded success
we had money but it wasn't money that got us the flags (thats the mistake JE and all since have fallen into)
it was great administrations.

and went they weren't great - see 1980 - no amount of money would win us a flag.
