Gibbs had a lot of flair when he was 16 and running around in the SANFL - but Pagan knocked that right out of him turning him into a tagger/run with player in his first few seasons - now Gibbs' mindset is about playing the percentages and he generally plays them well.
I remember early in his first season might have been against Brisbane he collected the ball dodged and shimmied past a few players and kicked a point - but he has rarely if ever attempted anything similar since.
If we can get Laidler back on the park and trust an in form (and less flaky) Jordan Russell on the other half back flank - I would like to see Gibbs get an extended run in the forward line and sometime through the middle.
Agree Agro. At the moment Gibbs is treading water. He is a neat footballer. Great anticipation, good kick thinks slightly ahead of the play and is very good one on one in the air and at ground level.
However he is playing predominately as a loose man in defence and has shown little courage when going back to help a fellow team mate. He lacks courage to take a hit for the team. I dont believe footballers like that change. Yarran is the same.
He seems to lack interest to me as an observer. Hie laconic style seems to have become more laconic.
Six years in the AFL system and he is playing a loose man in defence. I reckon he maybe thinks just like you and me. He expected better things and its not happening. Maybe Bryce would prefer being amongst the midfield action more . At least life was better tagging gun mids.
We and he should expect more. Number one pick in the 06 superdraft. Running around the SANFL at 16 dominating.
In one way its tough on Gibbs because the expectations are so high. On the other hand maybe he simply needs to have a tougher mind set to take on games. Time is starting to run out. He is playing the same roll as Hurn,Mattner etc.
Gets you thinking if we swapped him for a Taylor Walker and a draft pick it might be a good deal.
Ask yourself posters. If Bryce was out of the team how would that effect the team's peformance at the moment. Not that much I reckon.
Agree again Agro. Would like Gibbs to play as a foward. Third tall. His skills would be better used in this area.
I personally am fast coming to the conclusion that the expectations that he will be a gun midfielder are a distant myth.
