Essendon* lost to Melbourne, Richmond once, lost to North, Adelaide had them on the ropes for three quarters, scraped home against the Tigers the second time, and got home by a bit over a goal against the worst team in the AFL in Port Adelaide.

God help us if we lose this.

If Carlton lose this game it will be one of the most disappointing results in the clubs history.

When the teams (and umpires) are announced that may change though.

Having said that, anyone care to hazard a guess what Donstuie will do if we drop this one?

I think I'm still haunted by the memory of the Qualifying Final in 2000. We were a far better team than the Demons during that H&A season, but as they say "anything can happen in a final" and they knocked us off in front of a big crowd at the 'G (on a Sunday too!)....

I'm trying not to draw comparisions between that game and this game... :?

But being rational about it, assuming we don't suffer any major injuries in Round 24, we really should win this.

They have gotten us twice like that unexpectedly in finals I remember 1994 as well.

But Coxy, you'll be happy to know that it's my custom to take a week's hiatus upon any defeat to Essendon*. So you'll be free to write anything you like with a 0.0001% reduction in the number of people laughing at you

can anyone else see a prelim final against geelong on the cards??

yes yes, one week at a time etc..

but i just am not at all concerned with the bombers. they have sneaked into the eight, but default. Of the three times we have played them we have won twice by 12+ goals, and drawn a game when they where absoutely flying and at their best.

we play the MCG better than them, and i more than like our chances against West Coast over at Subiaco to be honest as well.

get to a prelim anything can happen, get to a GF against the Pies ... well ... this state will just about go mental!! you could sell 300,000 tickets for the game, and it would still sell out!!

Hawthorn will beat Geelong so we won't be playing Geelong if we get that far. Hawks will get Cats this time.

Definitely. To be in the top four most of the year coming off the back of two failed finals campaigns, it would really sting.

The thing is, Essendon* have nothing to lose when you look at it. They're a young team, nobody really expects them to do much come finals time, they will be the underdog against us. Ratten has pressure on him to win a final, as does the team, we've often been talked about as a top four side this year, and we knocked them off by 74 points a few weeks ago. The pressure is more on us than it is them.

Gee...they'd still be revelling over 99 prelim wouldnt they?

I think their level of bravery will actually make me vomit.

A lot of them still can't get over '99, but it's worth noting that the following year they spanked us in a prelim by 45 points. Any pain from 99 would have been erased that day I'd say. Over 10 years ago.

Someone remind me of the win/loss record of teams coming off the bye again?
not that it matters this time
i can taste the blood already
i just hope they play Carlysle anywhere near Walker again

i think the dieticians at the club should start Mitch on a strict diet of raw meat right about now.
maybe even make him catch his own feed. id pay to see him tackle a cow

what's all this stupid talk about 'if we lose'???

Positive thinking folks! We're much better then them, playing on the G', we've waited all season for this, can't see us winning by less than 6 goals.

I want Yarran and Jeffy to be replayed Michael Longs goal over and over and over this week.

one of the two will top that this game just so we never have to see Long's again.

That's the thing Kerna. We all know we're the better team, but these games have a habit of throwing up unpredictable results. When they were a dominant team we were a thereabouts team (think 1999, and 2001), we'd often get them. When they were a thereabouts team and we were anchored on or near the bottom, we'd often get them (2003, 04, 05 etc). Then when they were well below us in terms of ladder and skill, they'd beat us (2008- early 2010). They haven't had a win over us since round 3 2010, but you just never know, they could come out as the underdog and win.

As much as I don't care for the bloke, I reckon Malthouse delivered the best reply to the old "we've got nothing to lose" cliche. He said "yes you do, you can lose the right to play in the, (whichever), final". The winner of this game will play West Coast in the next final - the prize is the same for both teams.

This is great though isn't it? Games like this make footy worthwhile. It'll be the first game I've cared about "this" much for a long time. Be interesting to see what we do about the St.Kilda game too, (effort, team selection etc), since it really doesn't matter to us.

Great points made Kev, but I'd say that us losing a final for the third year running would have bigger repercussions than Essendon* losing one where it's clear they aren't up to finals standard anyway after some of the results they've had this season.

That aside, I agree, it's exciting stuff. Two big Victorian clubs in a cut-throat final in front of a packed MCG. The atmosphere would be electric.

who said they were stupid?

Clearly we are a better team, we just thumped them a month ago and they are looking tired. We want this, deserve it and will win it.
No stress required.
I think we can win in Perth also, we play Subiaco well.
