So you're saying that the new coach of Melbourne will be Darth Vader?

I've really noticed this year that Ratts' media skills have improved out of sight. He used to revert to the old ask the rhetorical question and then answer it. It was kind of like a nervous back-up line when questioned. This year, no question has had him stumped, he answers with personality and confidence as well as towing the company line. Good work.

The next step is to lift his enthusiasm a little bit with the way he speaks. If anyone has watched a Rex Ryan (coach of the NY Jets) press conference, you will know the standard of excitement that can be reached. He is the best at it.

Speaking of which, good old Chris Bryan is now their punter.

Hmmm, I agree he is more comfortable in the media which is a plus but I'm not sure he's getting much better.

I reckon it's got a lot to do with how your team is going which dictates how relaxed and confident you can be and how much people actually bother to listen to you. Rats is enjoying his first 'successful' year as coach and hes getting some respect for it. It all seems like wisdom if you're winning! He is more relaxed but I'm not sure he saying anything that exciting or insightful....? I'm not a huge fan of the way he communicates but he does seem to have a 'what you see is what you get' quality. Good luck to him.

Have I missed any?

Would you have Harvey at the bottom of that list?

that's pretty random! but enjoyable with the collective lack of current success. How about Bailey in there just for fun....

(and yes harvey at the bottom....he is a protected species among ex-player media)

Agree that he has improved immeasurably in this area -didnt hear this one but did an extended interview last saturday week on SEN and was excellent in the face of some better questioning than we are used to on SEN

I thought about emailing Swann it was so good - didnt couldnt find his email address but should have

This was one of my major reservations about Ratts ie how he represented the club and being able to articulate clearly the club wider strategies plans and also whether he could be at the forefront of footy debates/issues so that the club is well represented in that space

He has definitely won me over and whatever happens I would re-sign him

Frank,

That would have been on "Crunch Time" (11am Saturday), definitely the best AFL radio show there is.

yes thats the one and because they have elongated interview lends itself to more penetrating and perceptive questions rather than 2 second sound bites

Not sure why the ABC dont have whateley alves greg baum etc do a program at 12.00 pm midday on saturday along those line - I know they have the sunday show but really just a re-hash of weekends matches -rather than analytical

Even though digger is one of my best mates at Sunnyacres the coodabeens have run their race on ABC - not a great lead in to footy and because ABC have the secondary rights if you dont want SEN you get Taylor on 3aw who is really a modern version of that awful hunt fellow or you get supercilious brayshaw or lyon on MMM

Yep Crunch Time is the one radio program I go out of my way to listen to. They actually talk through most of the issues instead of glossing over, and the analysis is light years ahead of any other pregame show. The mark of the show is how they get their interview subjects to open up - on any other show the coach/player/administrator go on autopilot, throw out a few platitudes and they're done in five minutes. Crunch Time get a lot more out of the subject.

And it's not all about length of interview - I think if you stack it up vs OTC in terms of what they get out of their subjects, Crunch Time do a terrific job.
