I think there is a bit of confusion about what our goal is. According to the website and Jammo (

CARLTON will accept nothing less than a home final in 2011 after first-week exits in each of its last two campaigns.
We can finish 8th, get a home final and lose it by 20 goals and meet that aim. It's pretty simple to have one easily understood and explained aim. 2008 it was to have a % over 100 which was a reasonable aim from where we were. 2009 was to play finals, 2010 was to win a final - ie to make the second week of the finals. Surely if we are intent on improving, our aim this year has to be top 4, if we are really progressing.
Its the mixed messages that are confusing and destabilising. Swan says significant improvement, Ratts and Jammo are setting golas the same as 2010, Kerna says, during the season, we are trading a ruckman, Ratts says not.
The roles of Kerna and Swan, regardless of their footy history, is primarily in admin, resourcing and staffing the footy dept, not speaking for it or being part of it. So Ratts at least needs a year run where he is delivering the footy messages, and those messages need to be consistent and ambitious. If we don't improve on this year, then we get someone other than Kerna and Swan to set up a process for selecting a new coach sometime in September. And when Kerna and Swan say Vossy is the man, someone needs to tell them to shut up.
As I wrote in your thread gerry it is your interpretation that assumes just winning a final is our only aim. I'll post my reply to you in that thread again. I think they are all expecting significant improvement.
You originally stated... "How low are we aiming? I thought after Ratts claimed this as his aim at the end of the season he would have been told to get serious and aim to actually be better than last season, like win a final, finish top 4, win more games than we lose, win 14 games. For heaven's sake raise the bar! This is such a nothing aim."
And I replied
''I'm not so sure Gerry. I don't think you have read the article the right way.
I don't think the implication was that we expected to limp into the finals and hope we play a vic team to get a home final. Michael states, "but a home final has to be our goal this year, if not top four." Considering he is linking that aim to just below a top four spot then I think he is talking about a guaranteed home final based on ladder position, either fifth or sixth. That should cover your win more games than you lose query and move towards the 14 wins goal.
The fact that Michael also states that (well according to the author anyway) that the final losses, ''have left a bitter taste in the players' mouths" and that he '' believes there is plenty to suggest the Blues can go deeper into September'' would indicate to me that they fully expect to win a final. Which knocks off another of your requests.
Possibly a valid critcism is the aim of top four, although he does say, ''if not top four"
I really do think the article was actually about us expecting to do better than last season, rather than some sort of stagnation.
One of us is wrong anyway Or both partly right''
