Counter-productive to go back to Thornton as his static and sideways style of play isn't conducive to the fast rebounding football that the AFL has become. We need to persist with players who push forward and are proactive and we must keep getting games and experience into Davies Russell Jamison Bower etc and keep building for next year where we can hopefully add O'Keefe Tuohy and Lucas into the defensive mix.
Thornton is a good and effective player at the VFL level and will help the bullants push for a flag.
If Thornton isn't conducive to today's football then how the hell is Jamo more suited? Thornton actually uses the ball well and attacks the footy. He is prepared to come off his man and take marks and create a link off half back. Jamo gets very few possessions and is ineffective with them anyway.
In relation to Davies, I think he shows some positive signs however in the heat of battle last night he was taken off the ground and we had to send Henderson to defence in that last quarter. Not sure how this will work next week with Goodes, White and a resting ruckman pushing forward to expose the lack of a 3rd tall defender.
Thornton might have a good disposal efficiency but he does not use the ball well. His sideways and hesitant style of play allows the opposition time to flood upfield making it doubly difficult to go forward.
I agree he is good at reading the incoming opposition attack and being the 3rd man up but you need more tricks in your bag to be an effective AFL level player.
Jamo has struggled this year but the last few weeks he has shown positive signs IMO. He has only played 56 games so has plenty of upside and development left in him.
We need to keep building with our young guys and get valuable (finals) experience into them and think long term.
