I flew to Perth to watch us win....
The club organized some good tickets for my wife and I.

The setting was perfect, we stayed within walking distance from the ground and got a little tipsy before entering enemy territory.
An orange sunset gleamed over subiaco as the blues ran out to some standard 'booing'.
We were fine with that, it is expected. What I did not expect was my wife being abused because she had a descreet carlton scarf. A row over 'judd haters' were sitting behind us.

I'm not the type of person to allow someone to say something to my mrs without a retort.
So I did.... Calmly, but firm.
He told me to 'sit down' .... and that he was only joking.
I replied with a few adjectives, but stopped when security heading toward me.

A large man, and I'm not small, asked if 'everything was ok?'
I explained the situation.
Security pulled the main culprit aside and had a chat..... We continued watching the game.

After a couple of minutes the security officer tapped me on the shoulder, leant in and whispered, 'don't worry about them mate, these sand gropers are feral..... Carn the blues'

I love entering enemy territory... It allows me truly gage the life blood of a city.
Perth is a cute city, subiaco is a lovely suburb.
West coast supporters have no class.

Carlton fans are too busy potting their own team to bother about dealing with opposition fans.

I didn't hear anything from the Weagle supporters after half time.

In fact by the end of the game I had the front 3 entire rows left for me and my young fella to stand on and sing the song.

Those around me either didnt utter a peep all night - weird - or were bantering with Carlton supporters in a friendly manner. Odd bunch.

When I lived over there back in the late 90s, hating Eagles supporters got so bad that the only thing that was sweeter than Carlton winning, was seeing West Coast lose. The local media always went strangely silent after an Eagles loss.

ahh i remember the days when I lived in Perth and used to go to the footy there.

The great thing has to be the massive support that the blues have there courtesy of all those years of flogging great WA players. The WA Supporters club always had an event at a pub prior to the match with usually a Dorotich or a Bosustow attending.

As for Weagles supporters, they just never got it. They used to say "I suppose you'll be barracking for Essendon* against us tonight" to which I totally bamboozled them by saying "no way, I hate Essendon*".

"errr but, umm, err, they are from Victoria?"

The footy coverage there was awesome too. Short of a melbourne player doing a Carey or murdering half his team, it would barely rate a mention behind a seven page story about Ben Cousins hairdresser or the state of John Worsfolds injured toenail.

And then there was the West Australian best player award - only open to Freo and Weagles players.

Hasn't changed much.

The crowds still have blankets across their knees and bring a thermos. You'd be lucky to get a peep out them in a game apart from the odd -tut-tut, I'm not joking, its like barracking (normal stuff, not swearing or abusive) is like spitting in public.

They have got a problem though because they can't get young people into a game because of the demand for Eagles memberships. It's like that movie City of Men, the crowds are getting older and older because families won't buy (or can't buy) tickets and so the kids don't get to go.

An affect of this is that the crowds are becomming even more subdued as older people don't yell out as much. Its a bit creepy actually.

Freo games are full of hopeful little people in Dockers kit, different dynamic completely.

excellent post cimm1979.

Its so noticeable and is all a function of the initial set up of the eagles. We are so lucky that we can make a decision on the day to go to the 'G and see a game. Its simply not an option for most sandgropers and as you mention, the crowd is very subdued.
