ahh i remember the days when I lived in Perth and used to go to the footy there.
The great thing has to be the massive support that the blues have there courtesy of all those years of flogging great WA players. The WA Supporters club always had an event at a pub prior to the match with usually a Dorotich or a Bosustow attending.
As for Weagles supporters, they just never got it. They used to say "I suppose you'll be barracking for Essendon* against us tonight" to which I totally bamboozled them by saying "no way, I hate Essendon*".
"errr but, umm, err, they are from Victoria?"
The footy coverage there was awesome too. Short of a melbourne player doing a Carey or murdering half his team, it would barely rate a mention behind a seven page story about Ben Cousins hairdresser or the state of John Worsfolds injured toenail.
And then there was the West Australian best player award - only open to Freo and Weagles players.
Hasn't changed much.
The crowds still have blankets across their knees and bring a thermos. You'd be lucky to get a peep out them in a game apart from the odd -tut-tut, I'm not joking, its like barracking (normal stuff, not swearing or abusive) is like spitting in public.
They have got a problem though because they can't get young people into a game because of the demand for Eagles memberships. It's like that movie City of Men, the crowds are getting older and older because families won't buy (or can't buy) tickets and so the kids don't get to go.
An affect of this is that the crowds are becomming even more subdued as older people don't yell out as much. Its a bit creepy actually.
Freo games are full of hopeful little people in Dockers kit, different dynamic completely.
