problem in this case is Waite couldn't tackle so his option is to let the Freo player run past and pressure our ball carrier
The other problem is that DeBoer was nowhere near Armfield and was not running at him to pressure him. My biggest problem is working out whether Waite is clumsy or just plain dumb.
I was at the game and before the incident happened I screamed out "shepherd Waitey" and he did. He didn't hear me, but it looked to me to be the right thing to do.
There'a also 2 different camera angles I've since seen the same incident. One angle makes it look late, but the camera vision taken behind Armfield's run seems to warrant Waites shepherd. And it wasn't malicious by any stretch of the imagination.
What the suspension tells me is that Waite is a victim of his 2010 reputation. Not fair, sure, but the reputation is not good.
Many years ago Fletcher was let off lots of times when he should have been suspended, but his reputation has caught up with him too.
Sad to see really, because Waite is a great footballer to watch, and he's one of the few who have a bit of mongrel in them too...not Hall like either. And speaking of Hall, he too is tarnished by his record. Shouldn't be the case in this day and age of intelligence and era of common sense debate
Sad really...and a lot of bad luck.
My advice to posters taking pot shots at Waite is take a rest, and that it's not fair and all for a borderline incident requiring interpretation. Don't take the side of the adjudicators because they are not deciding on the punishment purely on what is presented before them imo. Precedence is set, and you hope it is a precedent; somehow I doubt it and strongly believe Waite has been sodomised by the tribunal...I mean victimised.
I hope Waite continues to be aggressive and sets the standard on what we expect from all our players ...without stepping over the line...the one that suspension is warranted.
