We were going to rebuild the right way starting with Goddard and Wells but Elliott and O'Reilly put a stop to that. Then Pagan went crazy with the axe.
Lots of reasons for our poor list after Parko.
Goddard and Wells would only have come about because we had just won the wooden spoon that year. And why? Injuries for one and no depth to replace any injuries.
Why no depth? Parkin had traded away a bunch of draft picks in the late 90's by which time in 2002 some would have been senior list regulars to provide depth.
Short memory. Must have a.
The latter years of Parko's era were years we probably thought we were in premiership contention and thus traded to top up in the chase for a flag.
IMO there's nothing wrong with that philosophy as long as when age and injury encroach too far there's an acceptance to bottom out and rebuild with youth, which we were prepared to do in 2002 before we were sanctioned.
Had we won a flag then the top-up strategy wouldnt have been questioned (its exactly what brissie is trying to do atm)
2000 - lost kouta+SOS (+rice) with injuries
2001 - lost kouta+ratten (+franchina) with injuries
kouta was close to, if not the best player in the comp when injured in both 2000+2001. SOS was one of the best defenders and ratten was one of the best in and under onballers at the time.
If we compared 2000/01 injuries with the previous few flag teams
In the cats 07+09 flag teams , the 2000 injury equivalent would have been ablett (best player)+scarlett (best defender) and 2001 injury equivalent would have been ablett (best player)+selwood (best in and under) - the cats would still have won against port but would'nt have won the 09 flag with those injuries
Similary hawks would have lost 08 flag, eagles in 06, swans in 05
