As it has been well documented, we have a very interesting draw this year, playing many of the better sides within the first 9 weeks of the season. It has been raised quite a bit that we may have a slow start to the season, with some even predicting that we could be 1-8 after 9 rounds. Looking at our fixture and the possible outcomes, I'm not quite sure that I subscribe to the theory of having a bad year, or missing the eight. The first 9 weeks of the season may be tough, but if you take a look at the following rounds, it could be the time where we hit a purple patch, gaining some momentum at the right time of year on the latter side of the fixture before the finals start. The four week period between rounds 10-13 are our make or break games. West Coast, Melbourne, North Melbourne, and Fremantle are our opponents, all teams that we have recent wins against and are more than capable of beating. This is when our run on should really start, and the beauty of the fixture is that we have a grand opportunity to post a couple of wins before the mid season break to further build momentum for the upcoming weeks.
As we saw last season, once we start to build a bit of momentum, anything can happen. We ran the Saints into the ground, unfortunate not to come away with the points, beat the Bulldogs convincingly and defeated eventual premier Geelong. When opposition supporters look at our draw, they fail to see the momentum that can be gathered at certain parts of the fixture, and the impact that can have on our year. I see no reason why we can't come home with a wet sail given the draw we have from about round 8 (Port Adelaide) onwards.
The middle section of the second part of our draw ramps up a bit, giving us the Lions again and the Bulldogs, but then from Round 16 onwards, it seems that we could hit another purple patch with stringing a few more wins together. It's not all doom and gloom as many suggest. There could be some serious momentum gained from our draw. Thoughts?
