Isn't this a common occurrance in other ball sports?
It is Mrs Caz, but a lot of Aussie Rules supporters are so AFL-centric that they cannot and will not look at other codes and how they do things because in their minds it is simply inferior!
These players are professional athletes and I think a lot will have the shock of their lives when the current restraints to player movement are successfully challenged and NRL and soccer transfers become common place
And if player loyalty is thrown out the door, I guess a lot of supporters will throw player and club loyalty out the door too.
How can our kids idolise a player who may not be there next year?
I empathise with parents of kids who idolised Fev. It's a difficult situation.
My kids are encouraged to barrack for the team, not the player.
I can see a lot of disappointment and a diminishing club loyalty as has happened with the NRL in NSW if it happens with the AFL. Sure the super league screwed things up, but I can assure you a lot of ex supporters/ members are nowdays just intersted bystanders who became too frustrated with the lack of player loyalty to the clubs, and it is too difficult to support a team and player when they know half way through a season that a player will be playing with the opposition next year.
TBH, I have gone luke warm on Gibbs just in case he is the one who leaves us for the GC. I don't think he will, but I aint going to risk being heart broken like I was when Hamill, Camporeale, Jesaulenko and Crosswell left us for other clubs. Nor do I want my boys to go through that either.
Change is inevitable though.
