As Wow highlighted, it is more than Voss. Although, it is clear Voss can't fix it. It is coaching, recruiting, development, culture, leadership... hero worship. It goes back years, with possibly only Ratten able to get some form of positive, effective game plan together since Pagan took over and was reamed by the AFL establishment. (And while I'm there, I also feel like Wayne Brittain was hard done by the injuries he copped at the time.)
I do not buy that almost all our players are completely rubbish, even though I can see our skills are terrible at the moment. I would bet that under a different system, game plan, culture, they would mostly be fine. I can also see great players at other teams who would not have been granted the runway they required to reach the heights they have if they were at Carlton. And while our drafting/recruiting has been pretty ordinary, there are many Premiership teams who had multiple and very notable draft fails. Including Hawthorn (the era of the Beaus), Melbourne (Scully/Trengove), and Richmond.
I do believe we have the right people steering the ship for the moment we are in: Wright and Davies. Cool heads who I really hope can sort out a way forward without overreacting. This time 2 years ago, the media had written off not only Fagan but were also forecasting the closing of the Brisbane window. It was widely thought that Sam Mitchell had cut too deep at Hawthorn and Cornes famously couldn't identify any heroes for their fans to get behind, apart from Sicily.
We need to find a coach who is strong but thinks independently. Who can work his way through whatever presents itself with our list, with the rules, with the way the game is going. I am really hoping that Wright and Davies can find this person.
