Quote:
VETERAN field umpire Matt Stevic has been selected to officiate in round 19.
Stevic made a mistake when he awarded a 50m penalty against Carlton midfielder Adam Cerra on Saturday night after appearing to call play on.
Hawthorn forward Jack Ginnivan went from a tough shot outside 50 in the wet to a shot in the goalsquare in the first quarter, which he converted in the 64-point win at the MCG.

Stevic has come under scrutiny since then, but is one of the League's most experienced umpires and will umpire this weekend.
The 46-year-old has umpired 532 games – the third-most in VFL/AFL history behind Brett Rosebury and Simon Meredith – since starting in 2004.

Stevic is also one of the most decorated umpires of all-time, officiating in a record 12 Grand Finals and 63 finals, while also being named All-Australian umpire eight times.

I"d be happy to have Stevic , Rosebury , or Meredith umpiring us every week . Overall pretty decent umpires . I wouldn't be ditching Stevic or any umpire for that matter for a mistake . Josh Fraser said it best when he mentioned that everyone makes mistakes including himself .

Yeah he's a good umpire when other teams are playing.

I question whether it was a mistake, or, he continues to show his true colours when it comes to carlton.
There wasn't just one "mistake" made by Stevic and co.

You never know what iimpact the bad umpiring decisions made to the Carlton psyche for the remainder of the game.

I recall the Carlton players (plural) psyche after the "play on- 50m penalty" desision was made; another gifted goal. The players got fed up. Cripps bumped over and put a Hawk player on his arse right infront of the umpire, showing his disdain for that call, after another 2 gifted goals prior ...in a bloody close match.

Yeah, we got run over, but how much was that from the players disheartened by the umpires' bias, and from our end, a lack of leadership from our leaders.

"Play on" says the umpire to the Hawks momentum.

Those moments are critical. Everything has to go right to beat a top team.

The scores were level at that point. The gift of a goal gave Hawthorn the early ascendancy. Then when a few other frees went against us then it's understandable if a few players thought that it wasn't going to be their day.

i’ve only watched most of the first quarter but there was a string of dodgy and inconsistent free kicks giving Hawks shots at goal in the first quarter. I could see the frustration on Cripps’ face after three or six really sus calls for holding the ball that gave Hawks all the licence in the world and was harsh on our players. oh and them scooping the ball blatantly.

As i said, i don’t think it changed the outcome, we were outclassed in many ways in this game and your right to repeat Fraser’s observation that we have lots of lessons to take from the game before we focus on the umpiring.

yeah Razor Ray was talking on ABC radio a couple of weeks ago and he made the claim that no senior umpire out there ever has the score of the game or what’s at stake in the game or the minutes to go when they blow the whistle (or don’t blow their whistle). and he implied that umpires are immune to bias or prejudice. but i recall playing pool with a boundary umpire like 25 years ago and after saying all the right things about how hard the jobs is etc i said i couldn’t help feeling Goldspink had it in for Carlton and the boudary umpire laughed and said oh Goldspink positively hates Carlton!

i also heard a rumour had to be escorted by security to his car in the car park after all games at Princess Park because he came in for so much harassment from Carlton supporters! not good but understandable.

That wasn't an apology or an admission that they got it wrong. It was just stating that Stevic hasn't been dropped.

“Stevie made a mistake” reads like an admission to me. AFL feeling a need to state the game ended in a 64 point loss made it the opposite of an apology, they basically said “who cares, we drink Blues tears as a chaser” if it was an apology they’d have said how tight the game was in the first quarter and how many controversial free kicks and play on calls there had been to that point in the game.

Who in the AFL said it? No one. It was Josh Gabelich the writer of the article who said it.
