Good. As long as his replacement isn't as fast and skilled as him.

I'm still traumatised by Impey carving us up in Perth during covid

Steven King had a massive tactical victory against the Hawks by denying them first use at ball ups. Granted, he has Max Gawn at his disposal and also our contest and clearance game is much stronger than the Demons.
It will be interesting to see what Fraser takes from that game.
For starters, it will be interesting to see if 209cm Riley Flynn is named - at the very least, I would make sure he is named as an am emergency to mess with their heads. Meek is listed as 203cm and it would be interesting to see if the Hawks name Reeves (not sure if he is injured based on the chat above…).
Of course, our midfield is strong so we might approach it in a different way.

Gawn was devasting against them and really did what he did to us - smashed it out to open ground where Pickett used his pace to exploit the Hawthorn slow midfield.
We don't have a Gawn but we now have a better-balanced midfield with Walsh, Smith and Ainsworth. I hope to see our coaches being a bit more aggressive.

Ned Reeves is also expected to miss one more game with a knee joint issue.

If he gets reliably beaten, its ok - we should have a practiced ability to rove to the opposition ruck (and we should know where each ruckman likes to hit it...).

I thought rucks smashing the ball into space so speedy mids could run onto it was how teams traditionally beat our contested game?

This resonates with me.

Thank god Reeves isn't playing in this game. Happy to see him in the Preliminary Final.
Riley is 209 now. Huge. Plys the reach. Mess with their heads
Given we are committed and confident to run out games I wouldn't be surprised if Fraser isn't deterred to carry an extra big man and pick Riley.

All we have to do is stop Meeks from hitting the ball at CB into the path/ advantage of his mids. Riley has more chance to do this than Pitto imo.
Around the ground rucking, congestion comes into play and if Pitto's bullocking doesnt work against Meek (usually doesn't), then try Riley. McKay is a featherweight amongst these big boys.

4 more sleeps.

I think Smith and Walsh are playing an outside role. Smith is elusive and Walsh runs the angles well. Last week the conditions messed up our game. i thought our mids adjusted and read the oppo ruck well in the 2nd when conditions were dry. That is progress to me.

Injury update: The cavalry is coming for Hawthorn

For Round 18's match with Carlton at the MCG on Saturday night, Hawthorn will likely welcome back Watson, Impey and Amon who are all tests.

I'd expect Dean and Acres to come in for us, with L Young and either Cottrell or Ison as an out

I'm not sure what changes I'd make this week, to be honest.

Newman - Derksen - Haynes
Wilson - Dean - Cowan
Hollands - Hewitt - Cerra
Hayward - McKay - Ainsworth
Evans - Kemp - Byrne
Pittonet - Walsh - Smith

Cripps - McGovern - Florent - ...

Then two of Ison, Cottrell, Moir, Acres or Williams I suppose.

I suppose you reward winning form and just make the Dean / Young swap due to injury.

Williams is way too fragile to consider right now, he was on and off the ground with achilles issues in the VFL match last week, would have been lucky to play 50% game time. He needs to get his body right.

Winning form didn't help Flynn Young or Acres. Ison has had a taste. He needs to go back and work on his game.

Dean for Young the only change

Not surprising, really... Acres deserves to be in, but that's the problem when you drop an in-form veteran for a young player, the next week you have to decide whether to drop the youngster after one game or keep freezing out the veteran. Dare I say, selection integrity?

After looking at their team - I'm slightly confident. Common baggers - just deliver it.
