You’ve pushed this narrative through the last couple pages. Is there a problem with how Power is coaching the VFL team? Is development stagnating?

I’ve just been following all of the hiring that’s gone on around him… but, yeah, getting steamrolled by 20 goals on the verge of finals isn’t a good omen.

Plus, he’s not Head of Development any more.

What has he achieved at North in his time there? Their win-loss record recently is Bolton-esque. Sounds like a dud appointment.

Fairdinkum what is the point of that post. FFS why do you feel the need to trash the appointment?

Are you hating on Jordan, Carlton FC, Vossy or Cook for the appointment. Tell us all about what you know of Jordan's Coaching career.

It would seem he worked at Footscray when Hansen was still there, so I guess he recommended him. Maybe your hate is on Hansen.

Perkins, who has worked with Port Adelaide, Essendon*, the Wallabies and more, says he doesn’t understand why AFL clubs haven’t picked up the phone to work with him.

“This is a question that I don’t understand,” he admitted to SEN Breakfast.

“I went to New Zealand and came back and I thought every cub in the AFL would call me up and they didn’t and I don’t understand it.

We all want to see a goal kicking coach at Carlton for obvious reasons.

If we can get Charlie and Harry kicking consistently straight with their set shots, instead of consistently inaccurately, we would do whatever needed to achieve that.

This guy, a former AFL consultant Ben Perkins can’t believe clubs’ lack of investment in the art of goal kicking. He insists his methods could improve teams by five goals.

quote]“I’ve got the artform down to the most simple procedure you can get, I’ve refined it and refined it and it is so simple and so easy and every week on the football I watch the players do everything wrong.

“Goal kicking is very much based around getting the run-up right. If you get the run up right, everything flows… you can make errors and still kick the ball pretty straight.

“But if the run-up is wrong, any other mistake you make is enhanced and you miss.”

Perkins believes Harry McKay’s goal-kicking woes would be “really easy” to fix and declared Aaron Naughton’s action in front of the sticks “terrible”.

As a big advocate for the importance of the run-up, he stated: “No player is hard to fix. Once you know how to do it, you can do it. It’s not hard, it’s easy.

“When I hear people saying, ‘he leans back here…’ it’s all total garbage, they don’t understand what is going on at all.”[/quote]

Lets get some goal kicking tuition from a different voice over summer....please ... and lets fix our goal kicking woes, and make Top 4 are surer thing.

The run-up thing resonates.
You can generally tell when someone is going to miss before they kick it by their run-up.
Whether it be some short stuttery steps or too close to man on mark or a late hook out to the side, it's very predictable

Seriously….

we watch bowlers all our lives stepping out
their run up…yet footballers have this
stupid arbitrary walk backwards…!

Harry never walks back far enough…gets cramped
every time…!

practice…step it out…and do it the same every time…!

what’s so difficult…?

the counting bit…?

goodness me…!

kindest regards tommi

i mean the guy can kick it 60 metres…yet needs
to be three metres from the man on the mark…!

go back mate…it’ll be ok…!

No doubt Harry needs a ton of work, but there’d be an almighty stink kicked up from the ground staff if footballers start calling for the bowler’s spray paint to mark every run up.

I’m with you brother. Everyone on the list should have a set shot routine.

People used to laugh at Matthew Lloyd testing the wind within Docklands with the roof on but he had a routine and he stuck to it.

Lloyd had a conversion rate of over 68% (not counting OOF).

Charlie kicks at 62% and Harry at 57%.

If they’d both kicked at Lloyd’s conversion rate they’d have kicked almost 60 extra goals between them.

When you consider how many close matches we’ve played over the last few years there are many that would have been wins instead of losses if they could have converted at 68%.

It’s been doing my head in forever.

It’s the easiest place to find incremental improvement across the entire team and yet we seem to do very little about it.

Best people in the world to teach set shot routines are golfing coaches.
Line yourself up.
Swing/Walk down the line.
Watch the ball to your club/foot.
Only look up once the ball has left your club/foot and you have completed the swing/kick.
And always remember, the body follows the head.

The time is NOW.

No excuse from the club (other than soft cap constraints. If it is that, the players should invest in themselves and use some of their salary to pay for their goal kicking needs/ shortfall.

Exactly Bondi. Now the club should be putting on the finishing touches to make us take the next step forward.

Really Harry as an example should pay someone in the off season to help with his kicking. I dont know why the club cant use Fevola to help out.

In Harry’s defence (on this point only), he hasn’t had the money until now. The terms of his mega deal don’t kick in until next year.

You would think his contract would either be heavily front loaded or rear loaded. With Charlie the opposite to H.

There are numerous people within the AFL community who specialise in kicking techniques. The key is to get "buy in" from the player. Most behaviours unfortunately are from when the players were very young and are extremely difficult to change. They're from when the hand/eye co-ordination isn't developed or kids are trying to handle footballs that are a miss match to their hand size.
Harry has made changes to his technique. His head falls away from being over the ball when he makes contact which makes his kicking inconsistent but I noticed an occasional attempt to stay more upright in his set shots later in the season. It will take time. Sometimes it frazzles the player and becomes paralysis by analysis.
Hopefully Harry is working on it over the off season. If he is willing to change, there are plenty of experts who can help. He has a few months to bed it in.
