"Kangaroos coach Dean Laidley believes that Carlton is showing signs of being the fittest team in the AFL, after running out pre-season competition premiers.

The Blues took out the Wizard Home Loans Cup almost two weeks ago, a feat which Laidley believes assisted the club in building some base match fitness.

"I think that Carlton are the fittest team in the competition right now, because of the games that they have actually played in the Wizard Cup," Laidley said, speaking before the Kangaroos' Friday training session.

"They're fitter, and they have improved enormously."

He rates us, pity we don't rate him.

Having played under Pagan I'm sure he respects his methods. I think Laidley is being written off a bit early by most and his contract extension suggests that North are pretty happy with his work.

I like Laidley's line about Denis now having his side playing for him. :D

Be afraid Roo boys, be very afraid!

i've always found it hard to understand how one team can be classed as so much fitter than another.Does it mean we have better athletes than them, we've trained harder over the pre season, or is it just Laidley's been watching Lance.

Perhaps he is referring to the 'match fitness' we have gained by playing 4 full pressure competition games . I used to find that playing real matches was the best way to get fit and get used to the pace of the game. Maybe in this regard we might be a few weeks ahead of the opposition.

If someone can site a precedent where Laidley has said or done anything that makes any sense at all then I might consider taking this seriously.

Sounds like the worst coach in the comp is using the classic Kevin Sheedy tactic of making excuses before a game against a team that you know you're going to have trouble with.
