Thanks to the forerunner in another thread:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=28035

... we at the Blueseum have posed the question...'Who is our greatest Flagless Blue?' Despite having over 180 players excluded, we still found this hard.

Have a read of the following, and yes the site has come to a conclusion...but not without disagreement!

http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-read_artic ... icleId=144

Who is the greatest Flagless Blue?

I shudder at the thought of Fev being included in that list

Why? Leading goalkicker many years in a row, AA at least twice and without a flag......surely his inclusion is a no brainer??

...but if you voted Fevola, you should admit it in this thread because I want to 'foe' you.

Fevola. May have been selfish, sulky, and a lot of things, but there's no denying the talent he has as a player.

Perhaps...but I don't think anyone doubts the talent of anyone on that list... The process around selecting the 'best' was around personal achievement and team respect. Rating talent on its own, across eras, is difficult, so rating on outputs seemed the best way to go.

I can't fault Horrie Clover's record and commitment to the Club. There is a wonderful article on the Blueseum by Jarusa that surrounds a letter Clover wrote to a fan. Quite beautiful really.

ps as a certified Tasmanian I will take the blame for Wiggins not being included here.

This poll shows how successful Carlton has been throughout history. Other clubs would have a lot more quality to select from if they did the same poll. (No disrespect to the above players)

Yeah, just look at a few of the names St.Kilda have on their list of best players without a flag. Blokes like Robert Harvey and Tony Lockett.

John James

Image

One of the games' great defenders, "Johnny" James is a Carlton legend. Though just 175 cm tall, he was highly skilled, tenacious and a spectacularly strong mark. In 195 games over eleven seasons (1953 to '63) he won Carlton's Best & Fairest three times (1955, 1960 & 1961) as well as the 1961 Brownlow Medal.

Bruce Bugsy Comben

Career : 1950 - 1961
Debut : Round 1, 1950 vs Melbourne, aged 19 years, 181 days
Carlton Player No. 636
Games : 188
Goals : 36
Last Game : Round 14, 1961 vs Footscray, aged 30 years, 279 days
Guernsey No. 15
Height : 173 cm (5 ft. 8 in.)
Weight : 79 kg (12 stone, 6 lbs.)
DOB : 25 October, 1930
Captain 1958-60
Best and Fairest: 1957, 1958
Carlton Hall of Fame (1989)
Team of the Century
Bugsy retired from VFL football after the 1961 season, and spent the following year as captain-coach of Werribee. In 1962 he was elected to the committee of the Carlton Football Club, and another long and valuable period of service began. At home in Werribee, the family store had become a supermarket, with another already open at nearby Laverton. Bruce stood for election to the Werribee Shire Council, was successful, and spent the next 34 years in chambers – including two terms as Mayor.

At Princes Park, he was equally busy. Yet throughout his years on the committee, including a term as Vice-President, Bugsy never lost touch with the grass-roots of the club, and there were few areas of the administration that he didn’t become involved in. Bruce genuinely liked people – especially Carlton people. On training nights, you could often find him sharing a beer and a laugh in the trainers room, or chatting to the diehards on the terraces in front of the Heatley stand. His love of the Navy Blue was never in question.

In 1982, Bruce was awarded an OAM (Order of Australia Medal) for services to the community, and to Australian Football.
In 1989, while still serving on the Club Committee, he was inducted into the Carlton Hall of Fame.
In May, 2000, he was named in the back pocket in Carlton’s Team of the Century.
In late 2001, he retired from the committee of the Carlton Football Club after 51 years of dedication.

And in December 2002, Princes Park lost one of its treasures when Bruce “Bugsy” Comben passed away, at the age of 72.

A Blue legend, played in the wrong era.

Voted for Fev but after reading a few comments wish I didn't ... here is an interesting thought .. look at the last few great full forwards Ablett, Fev, Lockett and Dunstall.

All except one had "personal" issues.

All except one lack team success in the form of a premiership.

Coincidence?

Houla should be on the list.

Yeah but Lockett and Ablett still made it to the one day in September, they just didn't in it. Ablett made it four times!! Fevola played in the worst team of the 2000's. Had he played in a strong side you could argue he may have won one.
