I believe the next Carlton coach should be from an outside club, and the candidate must have played in a premiership, and was a tough player.

Why an assistant from an outside club?
* They would have learnt fresh and new ideas and may bring something better to the CFC.
* Ratten seems to be a popular choice by many Carlton supporters, but he played under Parkin, Brittain and Pagan. So his coaching ideas and methods would be similar to the above coaches.
* Many would argue that Parkin was a great coach as he won 3 preierships at Carlton. But from when Parkin coached to now the game has changed considerably, and Parkin had alot of senior stars at his disposal. So it could be argued that most coaches with the talent that Parkin had would have won a premiership in his era. So it may not be entirely Parkin's coaching method that brought success.

Why a candidate who played in a premiership?
* By getting a candidate who played in a premiership, they will be able to teach our young list what is needed to win a premiership, from their own experience.

Why an ex- tough player as coach?
* Because our young team need to be taught how to play tough, aggressive footy, as we seem to struggle and lack confidence against tough oppossition like WCE.

So based on this theory I think the 4 perfect candidates for our next coach are:

Michael Voss
Mark Harvey
Gary O'Donnell
Guy McKenna

Brett Ratten played in premierships and won B&Fs in quality teams.
He played under Parkin, Walls, Brittain and Pagan and has experience as an assistant under Neale Daniher at Melbourne and Denis Pagan at Carlton.
He has worked as a midfield coach and forward coach and had the experience of being a senior coach at an EFL club. Anyone who knows how metro clubs wortk would realise the coach is coach, administrator, recruiter, mother to half the players etc etc etc.

He is also extremely motivated and communicates quite well.

I'd suggest he is far more qualified than Michael Voss and would command more respect than head job Harvey..

Mark Williams didn't play in a premiership.
Paul Roos didn't play in a premiership.
Denis Pagan didn't play in a premiership.
Mick Malthouse (hmm, was he at the Tigers in 82?)...

Anyway, you get the picture.

While I think it is no bad thing to look outside our own current inner circle I think you're selling Ratts a bit short if you reckon he's not capable of looking beyond the playing styles of the coaches he played under. Sure, there'd be influences from their styles, but Ratten is his own man and would be good enough to develop his own theories and methods of play.

Do you reckon Paul Roos ever played under a coach that employed flooding and tempo football?

Whether it is right or wrong if Pagan makes it to the end of 2008 I dare say our next coach will be a "Carlton man". If we have a new coach before R1 2008, then we might poach an imposter from somewhere.

I'm trying to prove that he shouldn't be so locked in to a set of criteria. The theory sounds good, but I've just listed 4 of the last 10 or so premiership winning coaches.

Or if you want to remove Pagan :P two of the last three flag winning coaches.

I'd like to see Ratten get the gig

if not

I have always been impressed with Bond or Longmire and recognize I wouldn't have a @#$%&! clue!

Mind you I'd like the coach of my son to get the gig!

Did anyone hear the big rumor on SEN this morning?

Pratt has told Swann to get Paul Roos. Offer is reportedly for a 5 year deal between $4m-$6m.

I wouldn't mind that, would maybe prefer Worsfold, but I doubt either are attainable. Both are pretty entrenched where they are, and Roos has stated he's not a career coach and already appears to be handing more responsibility over to Longmire.

I doubt you'd look at anyone who has coached, but doesn't have a job now. Ayres, Rhode, Frawley etc.

Of the untried...

Voss
Ratten
McKenna
Sumich
Bond
Longmire
Silvagni
O'Donnell...maybe
Pyke...maybe

I think a couple of those probably aren't ready yet, although I was counting Ratten amongst that. He may have done enough and some wiser, experienced heads around him, Daniher, Bradley, Crossisca could handle it full time now.

Are there any other would be coaches amongst the assistants that impress anyone?

How would you feel about Neal Daniher if he became available? I know Melbourne have been pretty up and down over the last 10 years, but have generally outperformed expectations. Could be on the way out, despite the injuries Melbourne have. he's always impressed me.

Would you believe Mark J that a guy phoned 3AW tonight claiming that Lethal has the gig next year.Just a random caller, but with Pratt calling the shots anything is possible...........by the way,i reckon Mathews is the best in the business with Voss being the heir apparent.

If money is no object and he was available I would go for worsfold simply because he is young and has had the experience of lifting a team from the bottom, developing young untried talent and has handled adversity extremely well. I believe if he was available then I would be spending my $$ on him rather than Roos or any other current coach or assistant. but I still believe that Pagan is doing a good job when you consider what he took over when he took the job, Our List was the worse in the AFL by a very very long way and the fact we missed out on critical draft picks in the two subsequent drafts has made his job so hard. I think he deserves a medal for the amount of bullshit he has had to ebdure at this club for the period of time he has been in charge. We have for the past 6 years been an absolute basket case and it is only now that we are getting the systems in place to be a professional and competant football entity.

I would be very worried about Paul Roos, purely because I think the way the Swans play destroys football. Personally, I'd almost rather lose than play their chipping the ball around game. What would be the chance of him changing tactics at a new club? I Have the same worries with Longmire.

Like you said I'd rather Worsfld

I think Ratts would be cherry ripe for the gig.

He got huge wraps down at Melbourne. Stepped out of that job and coached Norwood last year and almost won the whole thing. Got a few blokes down at Mitcham this year from Norwood and they rave about him.

Put it this way, if we appoint someone else we'll lose Ratten.

No more jobs for the boys, I want the best candidate possible. I don't care if they've never played in a premiership or have never even played AFL, as long as they have experience in taking a young AFL list and developing into a tight, professional and skilled unit. I want someone who has looked outside traditional AFL channels and can bring something new to the table. It's about getting ahead of the interstate teams not just aspiring to catch up to where they were circa 2005.

That said I also want more specialist coaches in the football department. People laugh at Collingwood with all their little positions and trips to Arizona, but after a while you have to stop and realise there isn't a massive difference in talent between our lists and they've been hit harder with injury than we have, but here's the hot tip - get on them for +39.5 if you want to make some extra cash this weekend.

It all costs money, but you have to spend money to make money and judging by the poaching of Swann and Icke, it appears as if King Richard isn't afraid to go out and get the best. Craig, Worsfold and Roos would be my shopping list and I'd love to have Grant Thomas and Michael Voss at the club in some capacity.
