As a youngster three players come immediately to mind;

1 - Chris Bond to Richmond
2 - Simon Minton-Connell in the Diesel trade (I also loved SMC and echo the sentiments in regards to him)
3 - Andrew Phillips back injury that forced him out of the game.

Since those years Kennedy is by far the biggest loss although again it was similar to the SMC trade in that we were getting one of, if not the premier player in the competition and to get something great you got to give up something that the other team values.

Of lesser note Fevola and Hamill.

Russell Ohlsen to Collingwood.......Ohlsen was a very brave onballer who served Collingwood well.
Aaron Hamill dissapointed me as well when he left, created a big hole at the club and he could have been a potential captain.....

Oliver took apart Jakovich in his prime at subi because sticks did an injury earlier. won us the game. Jakovich was in shock.Who the @#$%&! is this kid. Anyone that saw Stephen Oliver will say he was the one who got away sort of. Would have been a star had he not been such a country boy.

Also on a similar pathway and not mentioned
Tony Southcombe
Had this guy stayed longer he would have developed a huge following and would have been a gun as well.

Good call on Oliver and ''Bluey '' Southcombe.

biomechanically seems in good shape and preparedness for the coming breaker. Although I'm only going off a still image. I'll see what i can dig up on Youtube.

Aaron Hamill for sho. He was a natural leader, and him leaving really hurt the club.

Crosswell - brilliant player, we had some decent teams in the mid-70s & reckon Tiger would have won us an extra flag or two

Buzz - as above, missed out on his X-factor in mid-80s, could have stopped the Scum from winning at least one of their flags

Francis - we gave up a young, hugely skillful & hard player for peanuts

Oliver - absolutely shattered when he decided to go home for the last time - how would any team have handled us with Sticks & the Bush Coleman in the same fwd line

McConville - of all the crew that followed Jezza to the Aints he was the biggest loss

Hamill - as others have said, the contribution of a Hamill / Lance combination was much greater than the individual bits

Hamill still hurts.
Fev, none of us will realise how much we miss him until the season begins.
Stephen O"reilly to Carlton screwed us for a decade.

Croswell. He left us in his absolute prime.
Jezza, even though he was in the twilight of his career.
Walls, ditto.
McConville was a bit player at Carlton, struggled to get a game. He was the Wiggo of his day who played with good players around him (unlike Wiggo who arrived at the wrong time) and was lucky in a way to get selected and play in at least one premiership (79) I can recall without looking it up. I liked McConville and thought he should have played more footy for us.
I liked Hamill as well but seriously think he never did that well after he left. He was so good at Carlton because Whitnall was next to him at his peak. John Elliot saw that and rated him accordingly.
I was sad to see Catoggio go as well. he was the Eddie Betts of his day and every time he got the footy the croud would yell out, "Vinnievinnievinnie". Possibly the fastest player I have ever seen over the first two or three metres. Would have been faster except for the wind resistance.
I thought Karl Norman was a bad loss for us at the time.

David Parkin tells the story of how he rang Phil Maylin, and asked Phil to come in and see him.
Phil said, ''You're not gonna give me the arse are ya''?

He wasn't too bad for a while. He took more overhead marks in the firs5t half a season than he had in any 3 at Collingwood. However, then he dropped off and was pretty prdinary by the end of the season.
I actually enjoyed it when the Collingwood people threatened to destroy his memorabilia.

Mick McGuane

McGuane was a disaster. I didn't mind the idea of recruiting him, but the price we paid was more than excessive for a guy who was so suspect with injury. That we didn't seem to have done our homework on his possible fitness was stupid and unprofessional. That it came acropper so quickly was shocking.

David Clarke

I presume you mean the senior version: actually he was well past it when he came to Carlton, but he was still good enough to play on for another season. He was unlucky to miss playing in the GF. By that time he should have been aware he was a bit player, not the main man. But a few goals at the right time and he would have got his wish of playing in a premiership team.
Setanta for Pres wrote:
Stephen O'Reilly

Another very poor choice. Not only was his heart no longer in it, but his knees were buggered. We paid for too much and got caught out badly.
Setanta for Pres wrote:
Peter Bedford

A dreadful pickup, Bedford was barely up to VFA standard when he came to us. If he wanted to play in a finals' campaign he should have come many years earlier. His pace had gone totally and his inability and unwillingness to try his right foot was awful. he also didn't have a fraction of the endeavour or workrate he had shown at South Melbourne.
Setanta for Pres wrote:
Kevin Heath
He wasn't a bad pickup who did a useful job for a couple of years. He didn't cost us a lot and was a worthwhile performer.

Daniel Harford

Worth the risk with what we had at the time, but it didn't work out.
Setanta for Pres wrote:
Greg Wells
Was a bit suprised when his manager shopped him to Carlton, but he could have kept going for another season as well. With not much more effort he could have a triple Premiership player.

Mick Martyn
Nothing much to tell here.

Bill Barrot

This was a loss that wasn't necessary. He couldn't get along with Barassi, who left at the end of the season. Then he injured himself and I didn't feel so bad. But we could have been big winners had he got his head straight.

Getting back to the topic, I can't add too many new names:
[1] Aaron the Traitor: I was very disappointed with him. He would have been our next Captain had he remained. Of all the players who have left us he probably irritated me the most.
[2] Josh Kennedy:We had to pay the price, but it was high.
[3] Robert Walls: I have never quite understood what was going on there at the time, but Walls leaving to go to Fitzroy was unneccessary.
[4] Peter McConville: The admin may have wanted to make a point, but he was a good player to lose to make it with.
[5] Fev: I understand why he had to go, but that he made it inevitable is frustrating in the extreme.
