I wrote to the Club email account pre Christmas with a bit of displeasure and this came through today:

Dear Molsey,

Thankyou for taking the time to contact the Carlton Football Club to convey your thoughts regarding the behaviour of the players at our unofficial Christmas break-up.

In the wake of what happened on the boat cruise, and the subsequent fall-out, the Club notified the playing group that it had received a large volume of correspondence from Members and supporters. The playing group then requested the opportunity to respond to this feedback, which is why I am contacting you today.

Let me begin by saying on behalf of my teammates that we take full responsibility for what was clearly inappropriate behaviour at our pre-Christmas function. Furthermore, we unreservedly apologise to the various people and organisations associated with the Carlton Football Club and those affected by our regrettable actions.

What happened at the pre-Christmas function brought 2009 to a disappointing end for the Club. As for the players, having to deal with the fall-out was hardly the way we wanted to commence our first day of training for the New Year, and while the matter is now behind us, it is not forgotten.

The leadership group takes extra blame for these circumstances. Its members are entrusted by the Club to ensure appropriate levels of behaviour are maintained, so we put our hands up to acknowledge that we fell seriously short of our responsibilities.

I can understand that given the history of off-field incidents, many Carlton fans feel that we are not making any progress as a Club. I can assure you that all players are now under no illusions that there are great expectations of them, not only on the field but within the wider community.

Which is why we shall endeavour to ensure that it won’t happen again.

It is impossible for us as players to talk our way out of this situation. Each one of us has to behave our way out of it, proving to our teammates, coaches, administrators, Members and Sponsors that what happened prior to Christmas is not what this playing group represents.

Unfortunately that takes time, and all I can offer today is words. But I pledge that our actions in the future will do justice to the commitment we have made to the Carlton Football Club.

I encourage you, if you have not already done so, to log onto our website, carltonfc.com.au, to read the statements made by our President Stephen Kernahan and me on Monday.

On the track, it heartens me to tell you that 24 players ran personal best times around Princes Park when we returned to training on Monday.

This indicates the playing group is far fitter and stronger than at any time since I have been here and as Captain of this great Club I feel optimistic and hopeful for the season ahead. We’re united and will present for Round One as a disciplined hard-working group that will improve on what we produced in 2009.

Once again, thankyou for taking the time to contact the Carlton Football Club and I look forward to your continued support of the Club in 2010 and beyond.

Go Blues!

Chris

Yeah, with Ian it would have been "me and Sticks wrote".

"Stephen and I", Juddy. You're supposed to be the clever one! I haven't even touched on the paragraphing...

I'd like to think this was Juddys initiative.

He's right with the words and actions bit ...coz the boys have cried wolf a lot over the years...

hmmm ... think juddy is correct ...

sticks and juddy are the objects here so "Stephen and me" is correct since the pronoun is a direct object ...

if he had re-phrased the sentence to make the himself and sticks the subjects then it would be "Stephen and I" ...

then again i could be wrong  ...

Hopefully present in spirit and not in spirits.

You are correct Maxy. Easiest way is to remove the other person from the reference, and ask whether it would be 'me' or 'I'. That is, 'read the statement written by SK and ??' becomes 'read the statement written by me'...so 'me' it is.

Really? Geez. Points to Juddy there, but that just leaves it as a clumsy sentence.

I got the same letter as well.

On the surface, at least, it looks like the club/players realise they need to do and not talk...

Quote:
It is impossible for us as players to talk our way out of this situation. Each one of us has to behave our way out of it, proving to our teammates, coaches, administrators, Members and Sponsors that what happened prior to Christmas is not what this playing group represents.

Unfortunately that takes time, and all I can offer today is words. But I pledge that our actions in the future will do justice to the commitment we have made to the Carlton Football Club.

Hats off to the club in some respects. While they have not handled this scenario perfectly, it's clear they are making a concerted effort to right the wrongs.

I got one aswell.

it was a refreshing to read actually, not matter how cyncial some people will view it.

Maybe this was an incident that had to happen in away - really I though Fev getting the arse was going to be that incident which is probably why i was so dissapointed in the booze cruise in the first place.

hopefully this galvanises the unit even more.

The key will be in the actions,

but from a Communications perspective I am happy with the response. The fact people are pointing to a grammatical error perhaps indicates that it was in fact written by Chris Judd (or is at least made to appear that way!).

My sister has been a member for 9 years now and was not going to renew after the whole booze cruise incident. When I sent her Judd's email she has decided to revise - although I think she'll wait for the season to start to ensure there are no more stuff ups before she hands over her hard earned.

Overall though, I thought the email read well, and gave a bit of hope regarding the 24 PB's that were set at training on Monday (I wonder if one of those PB's was Andy Walker?). From a Comms response, I think it is a good start. Now we just need to back it up with actions.

Finally, if the response is genuinely from Chris Judd then he deserves absolute credit. It shows initiative to come from the captain, and the email is considered enough to show that he put a great deal of thought into it.

It also gives Judd just a little bit more authority over the playing group. That can only be a good thing
