While I am not a Christian, my origins, probably like most of us, is in some Christian faith that has a belief in the death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. In my opinion, if we are to play footy on Good Friday, there should be some blessing to 'the Lord' at the beginning of the match. Something along the lines of the last salute that is honoured on Anzac Day matches.

Sarva mangalam!

We need to be entertained on every day cos were so boring we cant spend a day at home with our families.
Its just todays society.
It has no regard for anything pure. It just needs a quick fix of something .
That is called progress. Meanwhile divorce rates are up, drug use is up, alcoholism is up, mental disease is up and suicide is up ad families are more fragile than ever.
Modern familes have no concept of pure time together.
So i suppose we can have footy games on the one and only days where a family can be together without distraction.
Its just too much to wait for the next day.

Its just pathetic really...

I think Christmas time is far more recognized and accepted as family time, which is a good thing.

I have no religious alignment and have no problem with sport being played on Good Friday, but would like to see a major focus continue to be on the RCH appeal.

..from a christian point of view though, personally.... ..i don't see how good friday has any more significance than holy thursday before it [footy played], or easter sunday after it [footy played].. .... ..and thats with 14 years of R.C schooling bouncing around inside my head.. .... ..sure, families need/should spend more time together.. ..but our society is based on choices.. ..govt. trying to impose a specific day for family gathering based on a christian calendar, when so many aussies aren't christian, is a bit silly.. .... ..why not give the people a holiday for the family on a regular dtae, devoid from any one particular faith..

..good friday is a bit over-rated.... ..if there was no resurrection on easter sunday, he'd just be another prophet & matyr, and there's heaps of them already.... ..hell, there'd be no christian religion at all, and as far as the jews are concerned [correct me if wrong], moses is their big prophet so if jesus [a jew] didnt rise again on sunday he wouldn't have had the impact.. ..easter sunday is pretty much what its all about.. ..a footy game day....

There were 284 days in 2009 to spend with the family and no football was played. 284 days to spend with the family with no distractions. If you can't manage to spend at least 1 of those 284 days with your family, then it's hardly going to matter if footy is played on Good Friday or not.

And just because football is being played, why should that prevent you from spending time with your family on Good Friday?

Maybe you're right.
Your argument has merits.
BUt football on good friday is coming, whether we like it or not.
And I personally don't want Carlton to miss out on what could be a very lucrative opportunity.

The AFL is short-sightedly missing a massive opportunity every year that Good Friday is footy-free.

The religion issue just doesn't wash, as has been pointed out in this thread already.

For those pushing the family crap can it, not everyone in Melb has family here, and half that do can't stand them anyway.

I can just see the Whitnall's all getting together at Graham's place and reminicing, yep we sure need mothing to do on GFiday

A nation wastes a whole frikkin day for what is really a peanut amount the appeal raises. There are better ways of raising money than that dumb ass telethon on every channel (surely 1 is enough )

That over-emphasized appeal is the cause of the most boring day every year in Aust.

And if its OK to play footy on Easter Monday or Anzac Day, what makes GF any different ?

Good Friday is a very boring day relative to others as there are fewest options regarding what activities are available.

Combine this with boring chit chatter like " I wonder how much the hospital raised today? " and it gets even worse.

Anyone including Synbad that tries to claim that they have never suffered a moments boredom is delusional.

What does the AFL owe religion, specifically Christianity ?
Should football also be stopped on Islamic, Hindu and Jewish holy days ?...I hope not

If you prefer to go to church and spend the day with the family good for you, you can tape the game and watch it Saturday if it makes you feel better

Let consumer demand determine whether football should be played on Good Friday.

Religious observance should be a matter for the individual, not something our governments or sporting bodies should enforce.

For me a 2pm game followed by a night game on GF.....2 good ones please.

and your above post is just drivel anyway  ...but it least it was fun for you to write, so therefore you are not boring

It wasn't that many posts ago that Brad said to get back on topic.

My point is that even in Italy, one of the most archly conservative religious countries, they play Serie A soccer on Good Friday. So that argument is a non-starter.

If it was about religion, then we wouldn't have Sunday footy at all.

And to appease Jewish supporters, we wouldn't have it on Saturday either.

So where would that leave us?

Did the AFL listen remotely to requests by Melbourne to have more matches for them scheduled for Sunday, to allow Joe Gutnick and other Jews to watch matches? So much for taking any religious concerns into account.

The mask of religion is a silly reason not to play footy on Good Friday. If you don't wish to go to a footy match on Good Friday, then that's your call if you don't feel it doesn't fit in with your beliefs. Plenty of posters have pointed out that there's no reason that Good Friday matches couldn't be played at a time which would fit in with peoples' observance of religion. And on top of that, all tickets could have a $2 surcharge to go to the RCH appeal.

In modern Australia, people with more devout faiths have to accept that some people don't wish to be held to ransom by a minority, and their desires to watch footy on a day like Good Friday should be considered maturely, not dismissed outright for specious reasons.

Eloquently put.

The suggestion that Good Friday is one when families get together would be in a minority of cases, but for the rest of us irrelevant. If people want to have a family day, then not only can they have Good Friday, but there are 364 other days they can avail themselves of the opportunity as well.

It's equally absurd to accuse people of being boring because they want to go to the football. Good Friday is one of the few public holidays available during the football season, and for those of us who work on weekends, also one of the few occasions to go to the footy.

As has been stated elsewhere, if people don't want to watch the football on Good Friday, that's their choice, but don't let the beliefs of the active minority unnecessarily get in the way of the majority.
