Been on a driving holiday on the way to Melbourne with the family. On the radio, it's Carlton Carlton Carlton...for the wrong reasons.
My thoughts reflected the old saying 'where there's smoke, there's fire', but I thought I better err on the side of caution and find out the other side of the media stories.
History tells me with the media that where's there's smoke, there's a small spark, and fabrication usually goes hand in hand with journalistic license...for the purpose of sensationalism...and of course stories to sell. Reminds me of the English tabloids.
In the HUN, negative reports on Carlton players and the FC are made on page 1, 5, 56 (editorial), page 86....over the break up party where no one got hurt, when there's more important things going on than footballers lives. FFS HUN. Yeah I realise I'm in Melbourne, but I also realise there's a lot of BS, guesswork, inuendo and sensationalism going on with the reporting, let alone blatant lies.
Regardless, the whole episode is disappointing. I know what I'm going to hear about over the next 2 weeks in Melbourne. It all starts today at xmas lunch. I better get my creative juices flowing to give a version of events with my own journalistic license. They are all innocent till proven guilty. Betts was caught loitering drunk. He's been caught. The police report verifies this. He's in trouble.
The players are innocent until proven guilty. The Levi episode suggesting the near blackout condition, I'm left to wonder, which doctor suggested that? Was he one drink away from oblivion? Two?
The brawl between players (Houla and Walks) is not what I'm hearing, but what I'm reading.
Eddie walking around Queen st in a drunk state is certainly unprofessional, but not a serious violation against the community.
I need to know more facts before jumping on the hysteria train.
If we assume that there has been serious misdemeanors made by players, what should be done about it?
$5000 fines. Big deal. That's all the power an AFL club has been given by the AFLPA and any other action seems to hurt the club more. To suspend the players with pay, means we lose a player for no return, and we pay for their actions. It's not the club's fault. It is the players' responsibility.
If we sack the player, the opposition just pick them up for nothing in the next draft. The club loses. The player continues to get paid.
A club should be allowed to suspend players without pay. A club should be able to protect itself from player misdemeanors. The player pulls the trigger and the club pays for it. It's all wrong. The players are adults and they make their own decisions. Decisions they have to live with and should pay the consequences of THEIR decisions like you and I would have to.
Player priveleges should be affected by the penalties. Pay and play should be taken away from the players. Someone has to protect the club, the competition and the sponsors from the players' actions.
I f the players are in the wrong, then I agree the players involved should be making the apology to the members and supporters of this great club. It is a privelege for these players to be playing for Carlton.
If, and mean if, they players have breached any team rules or laws and affected the club's reputation, then I would not hesitate imposing a lengthy suspension on players in the first rounds of 2010 (3, 6, 11...I don't know or worry about that). There's competition for spots, and frankly, we have the depth to cover Walker, Houla and Betts. If they should be penalised, then their position on field should be. They have to earn the right to have spot in the first 22 of this great club.
Personally, I think the leadership group, with the support of the rest of the list should declare an alcohol free year, and make a statement against binge drinking and change the popularising of a drinking culture. Admit that alcohol is not condusive to a healthy outcome for mind, body and soul, and is certainly not what a professional athlete should consider abusing. Lets turn this negative into a positive. I remember the year Fev declared an alcohol free year, he was trouble free and won his first Coleman. Imagine what an alcohol free year could do for the club on and off the feild. A sponsors dream.
Lastly, I don't know why, Swanny, Sticks, Ratts and the rest of the Carlton family who work closely with the club can't have a break from the media circus and enjoy this special period with their families. Similarly to the way Robbo has flown back to Tassie to enjoy being in the bossom of his family in anonimity.
Move over English tabloids, the Aussie media circus can more than match you now days.
Don't believe the hype.
Merry Xmas to all Carltonians and I hope you all have a safe and healthy vacation. Turn the page, and lets look forward to a great New Year in 2010.
Time heals all wounds. Lets get on the program Carlton players...do whatever it takes to give your members a flag or 2 or 3. That's what we want from you, and until you do that, you are servants of this club and its members.
