Fevola comes to mind right away, however, thinking outside of Fevola I would have to say that the Aaron Hamill move at the end of 2000 was probably one that upset me the most. The man was a machine, would do the job, uncompromisingly and effectively, and hearing one morning that he was on the move really left a hole in me as a supporter/fan of his and a massive hole in the team. He had a stellar year and at the time, along with Koutoufides, he was one of my absolute favourites. I used to love the way he went about his footy.

With Fevola traded to Brisbane recently, it got me thinking, which player moves over the years have hit you the hardest? Whether it was because you were a mad fan of theirs, they were a star player for the team or they had the potential to grow into a star at the club...

without a shadow of a doubt it was the turmoil at the end of the 79 season that lead to The Great Jezza going to St Kilda. After such an awesome finish to the year it was a sour note to go into the next season on and something that I feel robbed us of an opportunity of 4 in a row.

Wasn't overly concerned about that one at the time given what we were getting in return in McKernan who I had always admired as a player. But Porter would have been quite a handy player, and certainly would have lasted longer than McKernan.

Yeah, in pursuit of more money. Dare I say it, Aaron Hamill's presence in the team would have done wonders for our 2001 finals campaign.

Ahh yes, Pagan's clean out of 2003. Beaumont did nothing for Hawthorn really. Was pretty servicable with us. Will never forget the Essendon*/Hawthorn melee where two former Carlton teammates in Justin Murphy and Simon Beaumont were punching on.

Beaumont's choice post-game comments to an opposition player about our glorious coach at the time sealed his fate......

Fraser Murphy going to the Pies gutted me as I was in my early teens at the time and idolised him. Hardly a big on-field loss though. Was disappointed that we shipped out Peter McConville who was an early favourite of mine.... bet left of centre was the loss of the Buzz when he went home to WA.

Hamills last game was at the G in the prelim/qual final against Melb. We were 3/4 goals up at 3/4 time, he got a knock to the head and didn't take the field in the last term. We lost...it was the start of our downfall. He never played for us again, Whitnall was completely lost without him. It was the start of his decline as well.
At least when he went to the Aints he was a shadow of his former self. I always thought he was a bit soft leaving over some comments from Big Jack. Lost my respect.

The extra $2-300,000 a year probably helped. IIRC we offered about $350,000 and he was told that he was ranked around #8 on our list. Sydney offered $550k and his manager pushed him in that direction, with an "in principal" deal struck for the trade of Leo Barry and maybe some draft picks. This fell over as St Kilda flashed the money around. On the bottom of the ladder, having just signed Blight and flush with salary cap room and Butters and co, they offered $650k. At the time, his father went public and said he would be stupid to move as Carlton would always "look after" him and had done so. His manager was always the primary culprit to my recollection. He also started to have physical problems soon after the move and I privately wondered if he knew about some problems and that pushed him to secure his financial future first....

The 4 players above, I could nor or will not be able to watch play. Spewing I have to watch two Fevola games against us and also two kennedy games against us. Otherwise I will refuse to watch any of their games.

Moral of my story, dont have a favorite player.

Justin Murphy's move to Geelong and to Essendon* with Matthew Allan (both times) gutted me a bit. The two of them just looked lost at the Bombers in 2004 and I'm fairly certain were finished by the end of that year. The problem with Murphy was that he could never settle down at one club, and was often on the move. Started at Richmond, came to Carlton, went to Geelong, back to Carlton, then to Essendon*. Although he played his absolute best footy with us without a doubt.
