It enables "supporters" to dredge up anything negative they can find about their club's recent past and shout it to the world.
They're not happy that Jordan Russell is becoming a very good player because "they" would have delisted him years ago and not given him time to develop. Luckily CFC showed good judgement with Russell.
CFC is not a rabble, it's some supporters that are.

While i would have taken a tall with one of our last two selections I dont think WH deserves the anger he has been getting.
Seems a very decent bloke when you hear him speak and I dont doubt very dedicated and studious to the job and he will be judged on the results of his work.
But I fear he has been caught in this debate over finding a new Fev and providing a instant solution which we know was going to be impossible afte the club failed to lure Bradshaw. Regardless of if you wanted Talia, Panos, Black etc they were not going to give Fev like results..

Articles like this set WH to be the fall guy...not sure who leaked the story but it hasnt done WH any favours and was out of line IMO. I'm sure its been twisted by the HUN to create some angst and fire but it should never have hit the media at all like TUB said.
I'll be judging WH in 2-3 years time but I wont be judgung him this season on not finding a new Fev or taking Talia over Lucas....Lucas is a fine young footballer and I'm sure Talia is as well but neither of them will be kicking 70+ goals a season....and being the new Fev.

As far as I know..there was NO leak.

WH did an interview with JA (which he doesn't enjoy doing) and JA took the story about presenting to the board the list of names they would be targetting (which happens PRE draft, every single year) and came up with his first paragraph. No wonder journos are held in the same esteem as real estate and car salesmen.

After losing Fev during trade week this line of discussion was always going to raise its head. Even had we selected 3 talls rather than mids, the debate would have raged on. Unfortunately WH being in the position he is was always going to cop the brunt of the critisism (rightly or wrongly).

Lets just suck it up Blues fans. Give it time and lets see how the draftees we did select go.

Besides, unless I'm missing something here there is one name that we should not be forgetting - Lachie Henderson. He is as close to a 'Fev replacement' as we are gonna get. Sure Hendo isnt going to go out there and kick 90 goals in 2010, but nor too will Talia, Butcher, Black or any of the other KPP draftees that were on offer this year.

My prediction - in 2 years time Hendo will be kicking more goals and become a more damaging forward than Talia, Butcher, Black etc.

That's fine, but this article has portrayed the recruiting team and the board in a very poor light. A quick statement making a complete fool out of Jon Anderson would be a good starting point.

Wall to wall coverage of the Pies in Arizona, launching the slipper into the Blues, just the HUN being the HUN.

Media are still shi**ing themsleves about how good we will be in the next few years and are anxious to get plenty of negative stuff out there before the tide of success begins.

Anyone here catch BT on AW a few nights ago?? Gave us a "C" for recruiting, this carping sook that used to run around with Tiges and Pies. Dwayno was happy to come in behind him, as always. Get in now guys, the karma train is heading straight for you.

We got HENDO FFS, he is our long term FEV replacement, not the instant solution some of our dullard supporters were somehow hoping for! Give me Hendo ahead of any KPP kid in this draft.

One more thing - that article quotes WH stating that Saints only have "7 players above 195cms" and we have 8. Would be great if a stats guru around here did this analysis for the other 14 clubs, too? Would be fascinating to see just how diabolically short we really are.

Well that is a terrible malicous twisting of the story in that case....the average supporter reading that would have be taking it as WH being dragged before the board and being asked to justify his picks and read the riot act.
I think the club do need to put out a statement correcting what JA said.....

Wouldnt Hughes have to explain his decision to the board regardless of supporter outrage? I mean, its pretty important, ya know, drafting recruits, so he should always have to explain his decision to the board. Me thinks this was just a normal meeting and the Herald Scum just sensationalised the issue again

.. ..just to preface, i think WH did a good job this draft.. .... ...in regards to Hendos replacin' Fev longterm, nope.. ..he's the replacement CHF we traded to help get Judd.. ..we don't have a bonafide FF player, i think Krooz has the most natural ability/talent/understanding to play that position, but he's more ruck than fwd.. ..even though he'd excel at FF just as much as Ruck i reckon.. ..what we do have, is options we can try for FF, but we've got one definate KPF, plus other tall players we can push/rotate through the F50 so i don't believe we're lacking neccessarily, it's just our coaches are gonna need to rejig it all..

The draft isn't over yet.
Let's wait and see if WH has any smoky KPP's up his sleeve in the PSD and rookie drafts.
BTW Cachia impressed me in 2008 with the Knights. One of those kids that makes you look in the Record to see what his name is.

I agree with all of that, and I think even Ratten & Hughes themselves may have been secretly wishing that the player deemed "best available" at pick 12 happened to be a genuine full forward. However, anyone who thinks WH made a bad call by not recruiting a forward in this draft needs to check the facts. It's unanimously agreed that Lucas was the best player available at pick 12, most opinions have him a long way ahead of the best available tall in Talia, despite the fact Talia went at just behind him at pick #13. Gilly has already stated that there were no genuine tall forwards picked up after our second pick, pick 43, so:

WH had 2 chances to draft a forward this year:

- Pass on Lucas, a player rated in the top ten all year and clearly best available to reach for Talia, who isn't even a genuine forward.

Or

- Not draft Davies or Kerr, and REALLY reach for a forward... a forward that 16 AFL recruiting teams all agreed wasn’t good enough to be drafted at all.

As for previous years... recent history shows that drafting a KPF can be a risky and regrettable experience.

Just compare the mids vs talls in 2006 for instance, a year touted as "rich" for KP talent.

1 Bryce Gibbs - Midfielder - Superstar
2 Scott Gumbleton - KP Tall - Can't get on the park
3 Lachlan Hansen - KP Tall - Injuries and unfulfilled potential
4 Matthew Leuenberger - Ruck - Injuries and unfulfilled potential
5 Travis Boak - Midfielder - Superstar
6 Mitchell Thorp - KP Tall - Delisted... Injuries and unfulfilled potential
7 Joel Selwood - Midfielder - Superstar
8 Ben Reid - KP Tall - Solid, but pick #8 in a superdraft?
9 David Armitage - Midfielder - Solid
10 Nathan Brown - KP Tall - Solid, but over rated
11 Andrejs Everitt KP Tall - Potential, but largely unfulfilled
12 James Frawley - KP Tall - Future star.... probably the best of the KP's
13 Jack Riewoldt - KP Tall - Solid, could remain 'just' another player
14 James Sellar - KP Tall - Struggling... a lot....
15 Daniel O'Keefe - Midfielder - Delisted
16 Mitchell Brown - KP Tall - Solid, but again injuries

Have a look at how hard it is to find a 10 year KP forward from the 2006 superdraft, and yet some people think that passing on Talia, at a generous pick #13 in a weak draft, is such an amazing recruiting blunder. :donk:

Blues delighted with Draft Selections

Quote:
“The suggestion in today’s paper that Wayne Hughes (Carlton Recruiting Manager) had to explain the selection to the Board following the Draft is completely false. Wayne explained to the Board at a meeting prior to the Draft the process and the players we were looking at selecting and everyone was pleased with the decisions.

“We have been very selective in our recruiting in recent years and we draft the best available player. We have already added Lachie Henderson to our list for 2010 and we are confident he will be a key position player for Carlton for many years. With the return of two other key position players from injury; Jarrad Waite and Michael Jamison as well as Robbie Warnock retuning from an injury interrupted first season at Carlton, our tall stocks are in good order,” Swann added.

Doesn't look like we are. I think the deadline was this afternoon and I haven't seen any media report stating we have made room. Port making room with a delisting and WC with a retirement of a player seem to be the only extra ones in the PSD.

Regards Cazzesman
