Because of the young bloke I mentioned above I did a bit if research and the punters tend to come from a soccer background as it is not what makes up the core of the game and therefore those skills are lacking in a lot of their kids. The other factor is that there arnt as many scholarships available for soccer over there these kids see it as an easier way to get a scholarship.

Maybe. But I still reckon that soccer isn't an ideal preparation for punting. It might help to identify kids with strong legs, but there'd be a lot of re-programming involved. If that has been a traditional breeding ground, then it isn't surprising that Aussie Rules players are making the transition so well.

Remember that any soccer players making the transition to the special teams unit of an American Football team would prefer to do the kicking rather than the punting, in the same way that Aussie Rules players would prefer to do the punting rather than the kicking. That means that the soccer players who do go into punting are 2nd stringers who go into punting only when they can't wrest the kicking position away from someone else.

That's common knowledge - University of Hawaii. But you need to understand that being recruited as a punter by UoH without any experience isn't the same as playing in a Year 9 school footy team without having played before. As I said above, College football is an extremely high level of American Football, and it's intriguing that McBriar could take the punting position away from punters who did the job in High School teams in US schools.

I understand that entirely, but you're overrating the collegiate system, and UoH's team.

College football came in as the 3rd most popular sport in the US in THIS SURVEY - just behind Major League Baseball, and ahead of the NBA. Five of the College teams play in stadiums with seating capacity for more than 100,000! None of the non-Victorian AFL clubs comes close to that.

In around 2008, University of Hawaii had an average home crowd of 41,325, and had a budget of US$29.6M, on the back of 12-1 and 11-3 years - see HERE.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't see how I'm overrating college football or UH.

And by the way, Centrebet in Alice Springs is laying UH at 1.08 against New Mexico State at 8.25, and the start is at 19 points. You can't even bet on the VFL H&A matches, let alone Uni Blues or Uni Blacks ...

Some of that is a by-product of the regular schedule: College games on Saturday, NFL games on Sunday. Another element is the grass roots nature of college football: just about every college has a team.

Wasn't arguing UoH was an inferior college football team, more that all college football was vastly inferior to the pros. That should be a given.

Anyway, this is a complex and irrelevant debate. Kickers and punters are tapped up from anywhere because all they typically do is kick or punt. End of story.

Not good news? :-(

I'd personally prefer Aisakie as a third pick to Matt Maguire.

Hi all.

Asaike has been here for at least the past 5 to 6 weeks. I wish we all did get to see what he had to offer AFL ( and the Blues especially ) but the only way he'll get that chance again is to have a solid , breakout, year in the VFL.
I dont know if it's Gospel that he's here to play footy or not but he's definately back living with Setants. They live just up the road from me and i've seen 'em mowing the lawns !
