It will really be interesting to assess the relative fortunes of Carlton and Brisbane in the next few years given both ended up virtually at the same place on the ladder in 2009 but have for various reasons take almost diametrically opposite approaches to the trade and draft period

Voss has loaded up with re-badged middle aged footballers - clarke staker et al as well as obviously getting the wayward superstar Hollywood Fevola and is looking to grab a premiership before Brown Black Power and Bradshaw get too old - gave away most if not all of its early picks apart from 27
Their most important players including Hollywood are 28 years of age or more

Carlton on the other hand apart from McClean(albeit not old) have gone young Henderson Pick 12 and are going for the longer term - many of our changes will also involve youngish rookies jacobs joseph and gartlett being added to the senior list - Our better players are essentially 25 years of age or younger

Both approaches in a sense take courage from a young coach .If Voss doesnt get one in the next couple of years then given the advent of the two new teams and the lack of access to the draft Brisbane may be destined after a few years for a rather mediocre period. The Ratten approach also has also risks in that pick 12 and Hendo and the other youth on the list may not
be good enough to ultimately get a premiership(I obviously hope that this isnt the case)

Vossy thinks Fev is going to deliver them a flag in the next year or 2 - He is so far off the mark it is not funny - Brissy will be competitive but not good enough to take on the Cats Dogs Saints and Crows - He has made his play he is done a Ross Lyon and topped up but he hasn't got the midfield to deliver him the flag he wants - Black will get slower as will Power - Rich wont be able to run free like Walker allowed him to do .

Ratts and co got in the 8 this year had a look and realised we are 3 years away yet

We will win one before them

I don't think that's what they realised... we were a chance this year with Fev, now we need to work hard on the structure and we can be a chance in 2011.

No we were not your kidding yourself if you think we were - there we three or 4 games this year where we got spanked and torn to shreads by sides with bigger bodies

When Murph - Gibbs Kruez Grigg - Jospeh Hampson Warnock Jamo Mclean and Bower are 24 to 27 we will be in a position to challenge . Waite thornton and judd will be closer to 30 before we will be a power and guys like Scotland and Wiggo and Hoops and Setanta will be distant memories

You need your really good players to be in their mid 20's to have a serious crack our really good players with the exception of Judd are still under 22

I agree SB

I said at the start of this year we were still young and people need to be patient - our best players (bar Judd) are still kids, in 3+ years they will be the best group in the comp - Kruise/Murph/Gibbs will be dominating sides when the 3 of them are 25 or older.

Add Hammer, Warnock, Henderson, Yarran, and others in that range and I think we'll be fine.

Brisbane have 3 years tops I reckon to win a flag - after that they'll drop right back.

A gameplan would be a good beginning...

Anyway this would force Ratts to be more creative....

Lets see what he has in him....

On the one hand, I admire Voss. He had a bunch of champions 28 and over, Daniel Rich and Hendo, and nothing much in between. He realised they'd only be there abouts next year if he did nothing, and then the draft restrctions would cripple his ability to build towards a flag and replace his champions as they retired. So he went all in. And that's the only reason we were able to unload the Fev.

But I also feel sorry for him cause I think it's destined to fail like SB said.

Then I remember that he could have been coaching us, and turned us down, and I stop feeling sorry for him.

Where does he turn if it goes belly up in 3 years?

He has no midfield anyway....

All you have to do against the Lions is flood the space in your defence and then back your midfield on the rebound...

I doubt he has the defensive unit to stop the best teams so his gameplan will have to be mainly offensive. Not many full on offensive teams win flags.

I agree.
Black is a champion but is 31 at the start of next year. Power and Rich are quality but the rest of the midfielders are all B Graders at best.
