I have nothing but praise and admiration for Nick. To come back from such a serious injury and play some good footy is remarkable. Never forget that Nick also played at a time when we pretty much had no midfield and copped the attention of other teams rotating mid-field and still managed to have impact.

Best of luck Nick, enjoy your retirement and celebrate the clubs future success as you are part of the foundation of that success.

Football is only a brief period in life then it's gone.

Nick did well to prolong his carer after that terrible injury. Thanks for you efforts.

If it wasn't for Stevens, the pre- Judd / dark days era would have been even worse. Nick carried the midfield on many occasions and did very well.

Do not doubt the courage and grit of a bloke who can come back form NECK SURGERY to play as high a level of football as Stevo has.

Also anyone who can screw over Port AND Collingwood at the same time is a legend in my book.

He will always be an admired Carlton player in the darknavy household.

Great post dark navy.

+1

Very skillful player by hand and foot. Carried the team for many years.

..very good player, and helped us a lot.. ..even durin' the dark days, we still managed to get a bit of good luck swing our way, and he was some of it.. ..hopefully retiring early will help him out, a bit of a worry to hear the neck injury is of the degenerative sort..

Can't believe it's been six years. Ty started a thread about the most anticipated debuts. TC didn't even exist. The Ansett Cup match against Sydney was the first we had seen of him and we blew them out of the water. I remember watching that game at the Pineapple. Thought we'd be top 8 for sure.

Who was the player in the collision that caused the neck injury. Against the Bombers yeah?

Sums up my thoughts exactly - Nick probably wanted to get to Collingwood - but came to Carlton and was the one glimmer of hope that we could cling too during those dark years.

On the first day Nick Stevens attended pre-season training, I was sitting with Mrs. Caz and Cazzesman. The sun was shining, it was a balmy day and suddenly we had hope again for our club's future. We didn't think it was going to happen overnight...

For that sublime moment, I'll always be grateful to Stevens.

Well done to him he has given us great service and was a lone force in the guts during some of the dark years - for a player not naturally suited to inside work he worked tirelessly during those particular years

It's easy to look at him this year and question his commitment etc. and the fact that he really wanted Collingwood.
He was a light in our darkest hours.

Life is more than Football. I can't believe I said that.

Talk of Stevens Retirement Premature

Quote:
Media reports that Nick Stevens would announce his retirement today due to injury are incorrect, Carlton CEO Greg Swann said this afternoon.

"We have met with Nick and had discussions with the medical team regarding his future and at this stage no decision has been made on his immediate playing future.

Yep - and I remember the first day I met up with you we went to see Carlton vs Port Adelaide at Princes Park and he had 36 touches and absolutely tore our midfield a new one.

Probably still the best game I ever saw him play.

Shame it was against us...

Still gotta figure out what to do with the existing year left on the contract...but Stevo will get looked after - he's at Carlton...had he played for Hawthorn, they would have traded him to North Melbourne for the Roos' Pick 5...'degenerative neck injury? - what neck injury?'
