we should have dropped thornton and bower and bought in 2 more midfielders to help control the middle

defenders are clearly a waste of time

maybe.. considering we didnt get our hands on the baall in the centre in the last....

you cannot win games of footy if youre not first to the fall of the ball and get your hands to it... then you need support and run.. and a good link up structure...

Or you can bleat like a sheep.. "injuries"..... "injuries"..... when the fact is.. every other club gets those too... except StKilda this year....

At the end of the day... Waite has been murdered by Brown in the past as well....

.. and that happens because blokes like Black .. murder us....!!!

So if Black doesnt get the ball and energise the drives... not sure how Brown and Co will get their many opportunities...

We dont control the ball and put pressure on throughout the ground.. and that translates to opportunities to them.. and less for ourselves..

simple...!!!

Pros
- our offensive game was impressive
- Russell and Houla played better than I expected. Lock in for next year.
- boys tried very hard and our kick ins were a little but better
- we played our first final since 2001

Cons
- team balance not right yet - got hurt because our ruckman tired (boy I hope Warnock can play next year) and we are missing a hard bodied midfielder. we would not have lost last night if we had a player like Kirk/Bolton who would have layed a million tackles and controlled the stoppages and slowed the lions.
- we left brown and bradshaw one out too many times (Bower and Thornton were undersized to complete)
- we let a great opportunity slip

I really hope we look to compliment the current coaching panel - perhaps an ex Swan player might be worth considering

Not sure. Gibbs started well but fell right away. Murphy did some good things but had much less impact than usual. Judd too was struggling early but he picked it up as the game went on to play quite well.

A 10% increase by our two young guns would've been enough.

We seem very evenly matched with Brisbane.

I agree in part with Synbad that people are overrating the importance of the key defenders however you still have to factor in Thornton playing on a third tall instead of Brown.

When Thornton can play third tall he will chop a shitload of forward entries...he is right up there in the comp for marks from opposition kicks.

Waite like Thornton or Bower....or most defenders in the competition, is unable to go with someone like Brown one on one.

People want a full back like Presti...he got smashed today by Riewoldt but he's still a gun defender...that is when the filth defence can work as a unit and the midfield apply pressure.

St Kilda's midfield had so much possession that the filth could do little.

5 goals for Volt! What was Presti doing! Pies need to recruit a CHB.

It's how they work as a unit and the midfield pressure/run/spread.

You get Harley one on one on the lead and he'll get smashed. You let him play on a lesser opponent and he'll chop you up. Thornton is similar however I don't think he got smashed last night in the one on one contests.

but add a couple of bits and its the ripple effect

Milton the Monster would not have been so friendly without those extra drops of the tincture tenderness (bloody Count Kook)

I remember a conversation on SEN a few weeks back of players each team could not afford to lose.

Carlton = Jamison

The past few weeks is the proof in the pudding.

Yeah, the rule changes have limited the one on one defenders to those only with great closing speed and reach which means that most defences need a floating tall third man at the contests.

.......the midfielder you refer to (or the closest thing we have) was playing for the Bullants today and yes, IMO, would have gone a long way to holding Black last night.

I think we are slightly better than Brisbane which makes this feel even worse.

We played them three times this year and overall, across the three games probably led for at least 85-90% of the time (including two games at the Gabba where from memory they never led us in Round 11 and probably led us for a total of about 10 minutes on Saturday night (and never by more than seven points)). In all three games against them this year we could get well clear of them but they could never get more than about a goal clear of us. Interestingly, the Gabba games were quite similar in that we got well ahead only for them to mount late comebacks each time. One time we held them off and one time we didn't.
