The 1994 final vs Geelong was a real low point for me. I remember the exact emotions I went through when that siren sounded... i sat there dumbfounded thinking - is this it? it this the way Carlton finishes the season? It took me ages to compute it - it felt like they had been robbed. We got bundled out in a semi-final, not even making a preliminary after winning 15 matches in the home and away. Geelong had all their stars out and they still won that match.
This defeat in 2009 is just as bad but more of a lingering pain. Firstly, I flew up for the match which was an expensive thing to do, and also in terms of realising that the cards are against Carlton winning grand finals.
The Rich factor was the heart breaker for me. Seeing Rich carve us up made me realise that recruiting is the A1 priority for the Blues. If Brisbane didn't have Rich they wouldn't have won that final. We had the opportunity to get Rich and we overlooked him.
Then I started thinking about injuries, the fact there are about to be MORE teams that Carlton have to beat to make the finals, selection issues, form, etc etc... it is definitely a long road to the top - and one that few teams get an opportunity to get to. Maybe it is an impossible dream expecting Carlton to get there within the next few years.
I'm sorry?!
Man-child had 12 touches. 5 in the second half... Yeah he kicked a nice goal, but to lament one's recruiting strategy because a highly rated kid on the other team was given a bath by our guys, but kicked a telling goal late (then tried again moments later and missed everything, mind) is astonishing.
He touched the ball 12 f%#cking times and you're saying he carved us up?! I'm almost angrier at your ignorance than the result... however, thinking of you so forlorn and lost in hyperbolic lament cheers me up a bit, owing to how simply astonishing it is.
Were you at the game?
I don't care if he got 4 possessions, 15 possessions, 27 possessions or 5 possessions - he makes every one count. How many went to Brown on the chest? How many were telling possessions?
If you heard the crowd roar in the last quarter and the Carlton player's heads drop when he kicked that goal you would be able to speak with authority...instead, you were watching the game snuggled up in front of tv. So don't bang on about how crap he was cause he only got 1 possession or went three quarters on the bench or whatever.
While you were off to get your cup of twinings he was passing lace out to Brown and helped change the match. (Yes, yes... i know Black was doing it too...is that what you want to hear? me praising Black as well? )
So he only got 12 possessions or whatever for the match - give me one of his possessions to 15 of those backward 20 metre passes in defence possessions any day of the week.
Some players have the x-factor and he has it. If you want me to praise Black, Brown and Bradshaw as well as they were the "vote winners" well I ain't gonna do it.
Rich had about 4 of his 12 touches that did something. Well done to him. He'd be disappointed and underwhelmed with his performance in his first final, and so would any level headed football observers. Of course they'll all whip their cocks out at his goal and praise his "maturity" in such a time of crisis, but there is no doubt that he wasn't very good throughout the night.
What we've seen of Yarran, in glimpses admittedly, is exciting. It is the sort of player clubs clamor and want for. Yeah, he's a massive work in progress at the moment and will probably take a couple years to bare the sort of fruit expected of him, but when he does we'll sit back and marvel at
HIS poise and
HIS skills and
HIS goal kicking and
HIS ability to turn a game in a flash with
HIS class.
Yarran's goal against the Swans, when he just put on the jets and ran away from his opponent is something the likes of which Daniel Rich will never be able to do. This little stocky, nuggety man is not going to get any bigger, he's not going to get any quicker and, although he will probably become more consistent, this is going to coincide with the departures of Black and Power and co who provide him with the cover and, in many ways, the on-field anonymity he is afforded.
Chris will get bigger and become more confident and assured; Rich is already there. I wait for the day Chris tears up the Lions and everyone sits back and says "That's why we got him" whilst everyone's favorite chunky man pie is battling it out in the clinches, tagged heavily.
