Pro:

We get a top 10 draft pick

Con:

It's actually pick 11
We lost, no, we choked

The journey ends, but hopefully another begins.

The game for me was a microcosm of our whole year. Superb talent on display for all to see, and impressive play from our young players. But all brought undone by a lack of coherent team structure, set play nous, and corridor protection. This has caused us to yet again drop a game that should have been won.

The lessons from this game, and the year, need to be corrected. It seems this coach will be given a chance to do it - I hope he succeeds.

Summer starts tomorrow for Carlton, and it must all be about three things: Structure, Structure, and Structure.

PROS

1. Heath Scotland and Andrew Carrazzo deserve plaudits for standing up in the clearances. As secondary midfielders, they were great.

2. Gibbs dominated early but faded badly

3. I honestly don’t know who the guy wearing number 2 is but lock him in for the next 8 years at HBF. Andy McKay eat your heart out. I wonder where Jordan Russell went?

4. Our ruckmen got beat today, not because the other mob were better, but just older bigger. I like both 8 and 22 and with more size they won’t get pushed out of contests. Matthew Kreuzer has been asked to do too much this year, but gee he has done it well.

5. We have talent, we have the opportunity to build something great, I just pray those in charge can get our boys playing organised, impressive footy.

CONS

1. The Corridor - we concede it too easily, and use it too infrequently. I don’t know what our coach’s plan is, but this part makes no sense. They cut us up through the middle.

2. Team defence is poor - the ball streamed in with ease. We don’t play whole team defence. To become elite, we need to learn

3. Forward structure again - Compare their goals to ours. They kicked good solid lead-mark goals - we relied on the ball scummily falling over the back of a pack. There was some stat today about us being efficient when we enter forward 50 - I can’t reconcile that stat with what I observe in our forward play.

4. Some bad clangers by the fringe players. Wiggins, armfield, Cloke, Garlett. They all did some good things, but they did some shocking things too. Are they up to it? Well, Armfield just shouldn’t kick, the others need people to grab their spots.

5. If we’re still playing this type of footy by midyear next year, I think things could get nasty. Match Committee changes are obligatory over the summer, surely.

Well done to the boys for bringing Carlton to September. I’m proud of them.

But being in September is symbolic - you have to do something in September to give it meaning. And we must start working to that tomorrow.

The Carlton Football Club fights on.

Great post.

The start of an era - we just don't know it yet.

Go Blues. We didn't expect a flag - we'll be better for it next year, when
we inevitably make the finals.

PROs -

We made the finals. The boys tried thier hardest.

CONs -

We have to wait one more year to taste finals success.

What's one more year?! You know we're close. The boys had a crack.

PROS

- Great allround courageous performance from most of the team
- AJ - great courage
- in 2 years Black will be gone and the Lions will be relying on the hobbit

CONS

- Judd and Hampson choking on easy goals

- If Murphy was trying to prove to the media who have ridiculed him nationally for the past week that he is not a downhill skiier, then he failed. disappointing

- Hampson is not an A-grade ruckmen. At some stages he was tapping it backwards 20metres to Lions advantage. I admit he is improving, but people need to take off their rose coloured glasses. Warnock MUST be our number one ruck next year. lord help us if he is injured again

- Ratten having Judd of the ground and Hampson in the ruck when the Lions were coming. FFS put Judd and Kreuzer in and stop the flow, get 4 goals up and THEN take them off the ground. I still dont understand why he rotates judd off the ground when the game is up for the winning. THe last 4 minutes don't matter if we are up by 4. Arrogance

Massive responsibility on the recruiters this year.
We NEED KPP players. Can't afford another average Browne/Armfield draft. The hobbit Rich and soft-ball Johnston will be out on the town lauging at our expense tonight

Pros:

We made finals

It is obvious where we need to improve...i.e. coaching panel.

Cons:

We should have been playing again next week if not for poor tactics and application in the last.

I'm too depressed at the moment to think cogently, but this is a great post. We have positives from this season, but a lot to work on if we are going to really become a contender.

Cons: The MC, the coach, his staff, and how they cracked under the weight of a manageable lead

At least Fev seemed genuinely pissed off at losing.
Hope he gives it to some of the downhill brigade. :fight:

Pros:

Fevola was great, his tackling was sensational

Cons:
Simpson - gone missing
Stevens - played 1 quarter of football
Our Defenders - beaten quite badly
Grigg - not ready to play

2 & 4 have merit. 3 is untrue.

Simpson was not spotted up three times pushing into the 50, he could have slotted a couple on the run. Instead, we tried to pick out Fev and failed when Simpson had metres on his opponent.

Fevola
Russell
Gartlett

Cons:
At the end of the day, you live & die by your output. In our 1st finals game for 8 years, the following players should be disappointed in their output:
Judd
Murphy
Gibbs
Kreuzer
Betts
Simpson

Pros - good enough to be in a winning position at 3/4 time

Cons - something badly went wrong in the last.

The reality at least from where I sit is if we were simply never in it because we weren't good enough then so be it, we continue to work at it but we were in it and answers need to be found as to what happened and it would seem that all roads lead to the coaches box.

Out of any side to match up against, you would have wanted at least 1 extra tall, capable of defending the lions. As our 'tall defenders' Thornton and Bower were not capable of doing the one thing that they are supposed to... and that is stop the opposition forwards marking inside 50. Im not sold on blaming the midfield for all this. I mean, there are faults all over the ground, but many a time tonight, both Thornton and Bower were caught out of position for no logical reason. How the @#$%&! do you get out run by Brown and bradshaw? Yes, there were SOME examples where the ball was turned over so quickly that you cant blame them too much for being caught behind... but @#$%&!, that was a shit effort all around for them tonight. Both of them, easily beaten by their opponents.

Just another example of not being able to lock down a match. That was the worst qtr of football ive seen in a long time. I didnt see one good effort of any sort made by our midfield in the final 15mins. Basically handed the game to them on a platter.

Just awful.

Pros

Kreuzer's goal

The brunette in the white top who jumped up and down after Kreuzer's goal.

Russell's game and goal on the big stage

Walker getting through another game in one piece

Cons

Needed more of that brunette jumping up and down because we wasted possesion.

Supporters thinking Rich was the difference and he can do things Yarran can't in a game

No accountability

The loss will sting us and drive us higher next year.

CARLTON EXPECTS!

We might have spent all our petrol tickets getting that far ahead.

You can't say thay about most of Brisbane team who have premiership players and gun match winners inside 50.

Judd has pulled the midfield along all year.

They haven't lost a final at the Gabba.

Their fans bitched about the umps the last time, yet we almost had to have a player killed to win a free kick. :hitcomputer:

Any other forward would have folded like a house of cards under one of Merrett's attack on Fevola.

Or had their head taken off like Murphy in the packs.

Both would have received a free if they were a Brisbane player.

And Lions fans yelled ball everytime their players were tackled.

What a bunch of theatre goers...

QFGDMFT.

That is a contender for :garthp: post of the year...

Lucablue, what game were you watching!??!?!?!?

Pro - Happy with the MC for their calls on the squad.

Maybe Cloke was a bad call, but he game his all and came up short. Hard lesson learnt.

Garlett provided more than Yarran would have IMO... Bett's did ok.

Cloke tried but was too slow.

Great effort by all though.
