Yeah, but offending one's F-I-L is a life goal, offending one's wife is a life sentence.

And what's more, he obviously knows the Bombers are destined to me mashed by the Crows. He's not being dedicated by missing the match, he's being soft because he doesn't want to witness the massacre.

Pffft, there's only ONE decision you have to make. She'll get over it.

As long as you are prepared for a life of pain.

Not only is he going to pay for dinner - I am going to make his night miserable by getting updates on the Crows giving his Bummers a reaming.

The Missus will just be collateral damage.

Mate it doesn't matter if you go to the dinner or stay home and watch the game, she'll be upset with you either way. If you stay home she'll be upset you missed the dinner, if you go to the dinner she'll be upset because she'll feel bad about keeping you away from the football.

Moral of the story - do what you really want to do.

I can relate to this - my missus can't tolerate football and I have to continually deal with events that clash with the blues on telly. It's always mostly resolved when I simply go and watch the game regardless.

Put it this way Sparky - let her know just how much you're compromising, and that you'll require 'compensation' for your sacrifice.

I think you have to go to dinner. It's her birthday, you have to be there.

As Gro, I think it was, said on page one, the best thing you can do is tape the match and watch it "live" later on.

I might be a little slow, but I'm trying to work out what the actual dilemma is.

Had a brother in laws birthday last Saturday night on a friggin boat. Ended up telling the ball & chain that I wasn't going and it is her brothers fault for organising something where we had to be there at a certain time. Great work me. The only down side is that it will be used against me for eternity. It has already been raised four or five times, from memory...

No way would she want you to be at the dinner, but constantly on the phone... That's just rude.

Is there a TV at the dinner place?... That would be just as rude.

Pull the strings to make it a girls night out. It's the right thing to do.

Sparky you poor bloke! I don't envy you one bit mate! :(

Here's my take:

Lesson No. 1: A woman never says what she means!.... EVER!

When she says she's sitting on the fence... she isn't really.... It's women's speak for: "YOU BETTER COME OR ELSE...!!!"

Lesson No. 2: You have to be able to interpret the "Signals"

.........and the signals indicate she EXPECTS you to come:

"Signal" 1: she knew how much you wanted to watch the game.... and yet (conveniently) "forgot" and went ahead and scheduled the dinner anyway....

"Signal" 2: The girls are already shitcanning one of the partners because he cant make it due to footy commitments..... TRANSLATION: This is their subtle and indirect way of saying, "That guy's such a FLOWER! Buddy there'll be hell to pay later, if you follow suit!"...

Lesson No. 3: Women's English Vocabulary Top 10 (I bet the missus has already used some of these on you in the course of discussing your "dilemma"):

> 1. Yes = No
> 2. No = Yes
> 3. Maybe = No
> 4. We need = I want..
> 5. I am sorry = You'll be sorry
> 6. We need to talk = You're in trouble
> 7. Sure, go ahead = You better not
> 8. Do what you want = You will pay for this later
> 9. I am not upset = Of course I am upset, you moron!
> 10. You're certainly attentive tonight = Is sex all you ever think about?

Here endeth the lesson :P :P

I feel for you Sparky BUT I too had dinner plans that my wife had organised with all of our close friends - this was organised over a month ago and my cousin and I (both Carlton nuts) just said "Dinner is cancelled!" My defence was easy - I have waited for 8 years for this to happen and have paid bloody good money on membership - how could you expect me to throw all of this away?

Plus it's fathers day the next morning, so I have to get up early the next morning for church - Can't do a late night!

Good Luck :fight:

Just tape it and watch it on delay - what's the difference?

Perhaps a songline from Uncanny X-Men can be of assistance here:

"Friends (ie footy teams) last forever, but girls just come and go"

Thank you Bwian

Just go to the pub and watch the footy and then rock up to the party inebriated afterwards. Make sure though you stop at a servo on the the way to the party and get some servo flowers. And remember to exhale really deeply just before you go in for the hello smooch.

My problem is prospective.... so I hope that for the right reasons it will not eventuate.

Assuming her team wins on Saturday (a highly likely occurrence) my 13 year old daughter will be in the A-Grade netball GF.

Given that the Blues WILL be playing next week I will be totally stuffed if they get scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

After putting up with the last 8 years I am hanging out to get to a live finals game but I would not want to miss my daughter's first GF.

I AM LOOKING AT YOU DEMETRISPEW

Good news God, if we win, our next game will be on Friday night.
