Its not about the forward line... its not about the backline..... its about how you link the whole thing into one thats imporatnt...

I think we've got a few outdated and fragile links in our chain...

Caz,

Your post is such a cop out. Some of the development positional moves of our coaching staff are unforgiveable and have a massive impact on the long term development of our list. I don't know where to begin critiquing your post here. Suffice to say: Hammer was never a permanent forward. Yes at times Kruezer has had to play ruck but he is no first ruck. Therefore when have our coaches ever played him as a permanent forward this year. How about Thornton on Tippet yesterday? What was the response. Was Ohailpin moved there? Was Hammer sent back to double team him? THE CARLTON FOOTBALL CLUB HAS MASSIVE LONGTERM KEY POSITION DEFICIENCIES. Please tell us, that the club understands this and will develop a recruiting strategy to solve the problem that is likely to include trading for draft picks to pick up KPP. Give me a hint to ease my pain

I think youd find those at every club .... its how theyre used and maintained.. and then directed to play...

All those saying we can't complain about our fwd line until we get a full squad on the park are kidding themselves. How often does an AFL team have their full squad on the park? Hardly ever.

I do not think we have a problem with Key Defensive Depth because they are all young as well and the depth is as follows,

Thornton our oldest but best this year
Bower i think is coming along nicely
Jamison our best stopper but has to get body right
Waite not sure what to expect coming back from knee
Austin young but adds depth

Our Key position FWDS are the problem. There is no doubt about it.

Yes Garlett Yarran and Betts are goinbg to be good but they are not key position, Fish, Cloke and Setanta are not the option and im not sure Kruez is either.

Carlton need to this year try and draft or trade for at least 3 key possy fwds. I would be chasing one who is already playing AFL

It might be a cop out in your eyes but it's a fact none the less. In how many games this year has Ratts had his 4 ruckman all fit at the same time? How many games have we had all our main talls......Waite, Jamo, T-Bird, Bower, Austin and Setanta (not counting Hartlett or Cloke) fit at the same time?

I have no idea what the strategy is so I guess your pain must continue unabated.

Regards Cazzesman

Im pretty sure every team has players out....

Saying that a guy who has not played a single game for the club is why trhe forward structure is down is abit kind of weird...

True enough. And teams with deep lists are able to cover injuries. We don't and can't. Those are the facts regardless. Of course that doesn't excuse our last game but as we have scored heavily throughout the year something must be working. Perhaps with those injured players back we would score even heavier and have more option when things go wrong.

Be careful with trades and swaps. Look how well the Crows have done over the last four years with picks 20 - 70. Continue to draft, particularly this year, and forget about recruiting guys who can't get a game at lower clubs - Ash Hansen. Really if we get him it could be a worse decision than recruiting Chris Johnson. But I suspect Carlton being Carlton will try for a quick fix.

Crows got Tippett at #32. There will be good key possie players in this draft, let's draft them and develop them. We are still a fair way from a flag at this stage so we should recruit for the future, not top up with hacks for the present.

....crazy as it sounds, Eggy Betts gives us heaps of structure up fwd.. ..not just his 37goals, but leading the club with score assists and before suspension i think he was top 5 afl for assists, and also 2nd in fwd50 tackles.. ..he does and gives us alot up fwd.. ..we may be missing a genuine CHFbut after Fev, Edwardo's our most important forward..

..sure the 'team' has kicked good scores all year long, but the improvements come from our midfielders helping out, rather than a good contribution from our fwds.. ..our fwd's kicking goals has been the fev and betts show, and bugger all else over the season.. ..and those two have also been kickin' alot of freaky goals as well....

We kicked the century....
...... its not our problem....
... the defence is not our problem either...
.... its how we go about tying the whole thing together....

i understand what you are saying synbad but we can't look at it only at the MACRO level or the MICRO level - we need to come at it from inside and outside, east and west, etc if you get my drift.

the fact is, we have one very good full fwd, one very good crumber-flanker (betts), 2 development flankers (yarran and garlett), 1 developing lead-up CHF who has been played everywhere else but CHF except for the last 6 weeks (setanta).

we have no strong-marking, long-kicking guys who can play lead up or off the wing. CF porplyzia, CF le cras ETC

we need at least one and probably 2 more marking fwds who can rotate.

i tend to agree with donstuie's analysis of our drafting stocks over the last few years. When you look at:

> fisher - great mark and great facial hair and probably a good bloke but can't kick (i know we had one hand tied and did better than expected with nothing to play with at the time)
> hartlett - too many injuries to ever find out
> edwards - didn't make it
> wigg - love his efforts and think he is an important player but one who is more of a luxury than a staple (that is, you have him in the 22 as the 22nd man, for his hardness and endeavour)
> cloke - has tried hard but too inconsistent and can't take the last step
> waite - too valuable coming out of defence

We have not done well with developing marking, goal-kicking fwds in these last 8 "fev" years.

I really like Austin and his marking seems to be 2nd to none when he is in a 1-on-1, however we have really only used him out of defence in the few games he has played this year.

We have tried, but failed, with our selections, with the odd good luck story along the way (betts).

That is why I reckon we ought be moving heaven and earth to get a guy like mckinley who is still only very young and unfortunately looks a little like matty lloyd but nothing a good haircut can't fix.

Agree Eddie gives you much more than just 37 goals - has almost the most tackles in the forward 50 in the AFL - thats why I want Gartlett and Yarran to be used - they could add to the frontal pressure as well as the creativity in terms of kicking goals

We wont get mckinley Latte. He wont leave and we dont have anything to give them if he did.
Our recruiters will have to take on the responsibility to find a forward in the draft. A real good one.

spot on donstuie with panos and talia.
our defence is not the problem, doesnt help when waite, jamison and austin are all out.
cloke, fisher, o'hailpin, wiggins, hartlett and edwards are not key forwards.
im sure the blues will draft one of panos or talia come this draft.
1. first three picks should be key forwards/medium forwards.
2. with warnock playing next year im sure we will see kreuzer going forward.
3. play yarran for the whole year.
tall defenders,
waite, jamison, austin, thornton and bower.

medium/small defenders,
armfield, browne, johnson, russell and walker

mids,
judd, murphy, gibbs, simpson, stevens, grigg and hadley

shutdown types,
joseph and carrazzo

medium/small forwards,
betts, yarran, gartlett and houilhan

tall forwards,
fevola and ???? hopefully panos, talia or rohan.

sure i have missed some players but you get the idea!

Whilst its good to pick up a couple of gun talls...

Why is Talia and Panos considered the best players at pick 14????

In my opinion... (Thats for Sparky) and i keep saying this.... we need to wrestle the ascendency between the arcs to win games of footy...
You have the ball and attack... your defence is under less pressure and the oppositions under more pressure... with your attack having more opportunity....

We just need to understand how to control the game....

The top heavy football teams are a thing of the past as games continue to get faster and more organised...

I think Browne Yarran and Ando should be more heavily focused in that area of development during the preseason

In your opinion, last November Michael Hurely was over-rated . Why should anyone listen to you? Do those close to you Synbad tell you that "you're not always right" ?
