As usual good points raised, amongst the pre-conceived notions people have (and determination to be right).
I am going to digress a little, so if you want to keep on topic, scroll down to the 4th paragraph.
Marving's comment about most here being from the 1990s generation, I am definitely one of those. and saw us win a flag in 1995 the first year I begun to go to every game. I think the general hatred for Essendon* on this forum is borne out of people from my generation who remember the 1993 Grand Final very vividly, and how smug the Dons in general were. This is why the 1999 Preliminary Final means so much, no one gave us a single chance that day - NO ONE.
We had got flogged by 76 points in our last encounter in Round 16 for memory, Essendon* hadn't lost since then, and we got smashed against Brisbane 2 weeks earlier, then due to a flawed system played the Eagles at the MCG and won. What happened that day I will never forget, the opening Manton goal, Whitnall and Hamill marking everything that came their way early, you could just tell we had Essendon* on the run, we knew it and they knew it. The thought of losing to Carlton for Essendon* in such circumstances was unbearable, and we loved the idea of it. I have never seen, before or since a Carlton crowd so pumped at half time of a game (when we were 4 goals up).
Then the inevitable fight back occured, but never got out of hand as many expected. Then Alessio got the goal in the last to put them 17 points up, most people thought that was about it. Then Kouta went berserk, suddenly 3 goals came in a rush and we were back in front! The ending of the game needs no re-going over, we all know about Fraser Brown, Justin Murphy with the ball held aloft at the end. We didnt win the GF, which for a team which only won 12 home and away games, would of been ridiculous, but if Murph and Brown didnt go down, around the same period we got within 13 points in the 3rd, you never know.
Ok Ratts - I think people here are much harder on our club than other clubs, which is natural, but you have to be logical. Melvey makes excuses for Essendon* all the time, but when the same things apply to us (injuries, being young etc) they don't seem to be valid. Carlton and Essendon* could be the St Kilda and Geelong from 5 years ago, arguing about who is better. At this stage it looks like Geelong and St Kilda could be 1-1 in 2 months time, maybe us and Essendon* will be too, maybe it will be 0-0.
The jury is out on Ratts, as I like many others struggle to see what game plan we use, apart from some very basic fundamentals (get it to Judd & Fev) but I still feel we have many on our list who are either not capable yet or not capable at all, and it wouldn't matter what role they had or brilliant motivator they had, they wouldn't be any good. We are coming off a low base when the culture of the club was bad, and there is still reminants of that. Ratts isn't my idea of a great coach just yet, I think a clearer judgement will be able to be made next season. If we still see the same haphazard crap we see at the moment, the knives will be sharpening.
