Each and everyweek i concerntrate on the important things that sperates us from being potential Grand Finalists from the teams just making up the numbers.

#1. Kick-Outs.
IMHO we are clearly the worst in the leauge. Even Melbourne has a better structure. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion.
Johnson gets the ball, waits.................... nobody leads............... thinks about it, then gets the hurry on from the ump................kicks to thornton in the pocket................. looks up ahead along the wing (mean while there is space in the centre of the ground yet nobody leads there).............thinks about it a bit longer and then FINALLY does one of two possible scenarios.

A) Bombs long towards the wing and hopes for the best
B) Kicks backwards to Johnson and we start again.

Good god - there is no decent excuse as to why this would be happening. It's amature stuff, yet we've done it all bloody year.

SAME STORY ALL YEAR!

#2. We are Way way way to defensive.

It's almost as if Ratts goes out there trying not to loose rather than trying to win. You have the leauges best forward and a 4 goal wind advantage and your playing him up the ground along the wing? WTF? :banghead:

This has been going on all year.

Last week, we were 5 goals down and we still flooded at times? It makes no sense to me?

SAME STORY ALL YEAR!

#3. Forward Line Structure.

Don't kid yourself. There is none. Zero. Last week it was evident the most. Kreuzer, Fisher, Fevola, Betts and to a lesser extent Yarran...............yet we manage just 4 marks inside 50 and just 4 goals for the game.
Sure, Collingwood put preasure on, but bloody hell we made it easy for them.

For me, it appears as though our forward line structure is "Kick to Fevola" and if he's double teamed or is having a bad game, then we throw Kreuzer down there and cross our fingers.

SAME STORY ALL YEAR!

#4. Match Selections.

Good god, they're just as bad as the tribunal............. all over the place.

Sure, the MC are to blame for this as well, but Ratts is a big part of that.

Not playing Setanta in certain games easilly cost us (you know the ones i'm talking about).
Constantly playing certain players despite their poor form (again, no point naming them).
More and more "Revolving Door" selections. (In one week, out the next).

There is no consistancy.

I do give him credit for the "Stevens" decision though.

#5. Inability to use the corridors.

Good god it's frustrating.

Essendon* spotted this well. They knew we pushed wide and they let us. They put preasure on us wide which forced a turn-over and BANG.............. Instantlly they had their speedsters alone in the centre running it straight up the ground.

Much like our kick-ins, they are predicatable and painfull to watch.

SAME STORY ALL YEAR!

If these issue continue into next year (and honestly, Ratts will be coaching next year - it's silly to think otherwise) then NO - i don't think Ratts is the man.

Great post, summed up our year perfectly. We all know the frustration of our kicks in after a behind, at least Stevens back this week may help in this area. Going down the ground via the coast is very obvious too. The selection of players is frustrating for us but imagine how some of the players must feel. There are those who have done very little to warrant coming into the side (wont name them but we all know who they are) and some who have done well in the Bullants (Cloke) and still not getting selected.
North are a good running side so I hope we are not found out being too big this week, lose tonight and all hell will break loose.

This idea of judging the year on whether we make the finals is a joke.

Whether we finish 7th 8th or 9th doesn't really alter the fact that our deficiencies are not being corrected (and you could say they're getting worse).

We could make the eight with our last 5 wins being

Melbourne
North (crap game)
Sydney (crap game)
Richmond (crap game)
Freo (even worse)

They're 5 of the bottom 6, and not one of the wins so far has been convincing.

Brett Ratten is taking us nowhere.

Same things tonight that everyone else has mentioned (kickouts, ball movement, 50 entries, reactive tactics).

The club's leadership MUST ACT, or the members will have their say - but that will be too little too late

Let's see Ratts - we were too slow and conservative against Collingwood weren't we. Let's play on at all costs then. And Gibbs gives a stupid play on at all costs handball in the D50 for their first goal.

Bryce Gibbs is class. But that was an act of confusion in an otherwise brilliant performance, that sums up the confusion of the list regarding our gameplan.

There is NO CONSTANT MESSAGE OR THEME TO OUR PLAY. It changes every week.

Changes to the coaching set up are surely mandatory!

Im not sure if anyone noticed it... but it was absolutely palpable that the players just had no idea what the game plan is-
there is so much confusion, so much finger pointing, so much angst and frustration out on the field.. it just feels like there is no system whatsoever to our play.. and we are the team that often wonders where our next goal is going to come from.
As SV pointed out, the most worrying thing of all is how our coaching staff change our game plan on a whim. "Last week didnt work, so lets do the opposite." We are a professional football club and nobody- the players, the coaching staff, the supporters, have a clue what we are doing on the field!
Again- we leave it up to the same group of 5-6 players every week to win us our games... we may as well play with 5 and the remaining 17 can be witches hats..
This is seriously bordering on terminal.. and dont give me the "we won, 9-7 etc bullshit argument.." We are really struggling

ENOUGH !!!!!

no consistency re selection

no formulation of any gameplan

no kickout strategies (FFS EVEN ARMFIELD had a go tonight !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

ENOUGH !!!

at least in the dark days we had some hope...rats is sucking all of that hope away !

and I dont care about falling into the eight and playing one final (I'm actually more scared about how embarrassing a trip could be to AAMI)

this group is treading water....

beating north, freo, sydney, richmond, wc etc doesnt show progress !

What about beating Brisbane (twice), Bulldogs, and Collingwood? I agree no one on the coaching panel should be protected but seriously get a grip.......

Last year we were celebrating winning some interstate games, this year we have consolidated those interstate wins and won a few locally against bogey sides we haven't beaten for 7-8 years, and you still want to complain?

We are still not much chop this year unless we are on song (e.g. St. Kilda game) but we are where we deserve to be - 7th Nothing more, nothing less. We lose first week of the finals - who cares - maybe confirms our position in the comp that's all.

Who would've thougth the finals bookends would be Brittain and Ratten with the chump in between being two time premiership coach Denis Pagan?

Well done to Ratts getting us back into the finals! It's been a long and lonely wait.

Just like the song after the game, you can only feel flat after watching that. How anyone can be satisfied after that performance is beyond me. We are listless and playing bottom 8 football. We'll get mauled in the finals if we keep this up!

I was thinking the same thing.

Same basic mistakes. Same lack of direction. Same lack of strategy.

We are looking better for one reason alone....the kids are getting older.

Did you expect more this year?

Finals will meet my expectations. Get there and I am happy. With out list i think that is a major breakthrough and will give us a nice base to build on. Hopefully have a real crack at a flag sometime between 2012 - 2014.

Go Blues !

Very true, but we're in the top 8.

That's a start. At least we'll have the chance to improve in September, rather than miss out on finals and play games of "What if...?"

Give me a break - we have won 10 games - I reckon we will really push the cats next week - I still think we will win another couple of games this year - I DIDNT THINK WE PLAYED WELL but we did win and won our tenth game of the year -won 4 out of the last 5 - cant remember the last time we did this - we havent played well in the last 5 weeks but we have got across the line - still a lot of upside with this team
Only lost once at Etihad against Saints I reckon we will beat Adelaide there in the last game

People here are far too critical -this team and coach are developing - expectations are too high at this stage

Great point KK

I'd rather play crap football now and win a couple than be at the top of our game now and miss out and then wonder what might have been.

We know how we can play when we want to, I'd like to see this come together in the last 2 games before finals and actually scare a team or two in the lead up to the finals.

Totally agree that we are pretty much struggling. That being said, we've won 4 from 5 albeit against lower quality teams. Though I'll take the ugly wins quite happily.

Just imagine what we could do if we got our shit together? Could easily pinch a final

Though at the moment that's pretty wishful thinking.

Starts next week. Got nothing to lose. Take the game head on and at full intensity. None of this ultra defensive, too cautious football.

I believe Ratts even said as much post match.

one thing i've noticed with ratts and i could be way off but it seems to me as if we start games with a defensive mindset and then use our fitness, which they see as a strength, as a way of taking the lead later in the game. or alternatively, when we're down and need to score quick goals, we play more attacking and with more freedom.

Hmmm, so its not progress to win more games than you have been previously? I am not convinced of Ratts, but to say no progress has been made is wrong. Remember a time, when we beat no one ever?
