If Brett Ratten isn't the longterm answer as the coach of the Carlton Football Club then who would you target?

I agree with a lot of the sentiment shown around these parts in that while Rats will always be a champion of the club he has far too many coaching deficiencies to lead us to the promised land. He was one of my favorite players growing up but playing level doesn't match coaching skill.

What I'd like to see happen is at the end of the year I'd like to see Brett step down as coach. I'd like to see Stephen Silvagni inserted as the head coach of the Carlton Football club whereby a revamp of the assistant coaches will also take place.

I'd love to see Carlton go out and get Peter Dean as the coach of the backline (even with Silvagni as coach); I'd like to see them bring in Scott West (if he's interested) as the midfield coach and I'd look at who was available to take the forward line coaching position as well as the other coaching positions.

Was speaking to a St Kilda player earlier today who believes that SOS is absolutely outstanding and a key reason for their success this season. Believes he'd be a great coach as he is a tremendous communicator and understands the modern game as well as anybody.

That last area is a huge problem for us right now- our game plan doesn't suit the modern game at all. Our preparation looks weak and fails in comparison to many other teams. Just take a look at how Collingwood used their warmup time last night, it was like watching two levels of professionalism - amateur and elite.

This is just my opinion, I'd love to hear what everybody else thinks.

So if not Rats, then who?

10 plus years at the pies - not won anything - Good coach but ?????

I would get SOS - he has done a fair apprenticeship now

If not as a senoir coach at least an senoirr assistant

Listening to Riley the other day - not impressed at all

pointless speculation IMO. Rats is locked in for another 2 years and its going to take a disaster of epic proportions to shorten that period. Rightly or wrongly ( and I tend toward the latter) I would say Rats is as safe as any coach in the league.

I agree that its pointless speculation. I don't know if Rats is a good enough coach (I dont think so given the couple of months I've been back in Australia), but, I'm sick of everyone labeling him a dud coach yet when prompted to provide the answer for whom they would insert as Carlton coach they refuse to come up with a quality name.

If those people who are so keen to see the ends of the Ratten coaching experiment at Carlton could come up with who they would personally desire to become the coach it would make those arguments so much more palatable.

Our aim at the start of the season was to make the finals. we're still on track for that. we're clearly not top 4 material. about 7th or 8th is our level. unsurprisingly, that is where we sit. We show all the hallmarks of a young and developing team. we win a few then lose a few. we also have a young coach, who has no illusions about where our list is at. its hard to be patient, because we are Carlton, but the days of instant success and remedies are gone. we are building for long term success, which requires patience and perserverance. Go Blues

He has no illusions about where the list is now you mean....... but the question is does he know where he himself is at???

Beat us twice and the last 4 times weve played with an inferior list... (so we were saying before this year).. and are ahead on the ladder if im not mistaken....

shouldnt we try and get our boys club house in order???

Contracted for 2 years after this, seriously guys, Ratts is coaching Carlton in 2010. Even if we miss the finals.

Would've love it if the planets aligned and we had Buckley lined up to coach us, but not to be.

All we can hope is that Ratts can learn on the job and develop/keep developing at a reasonably rapid rate. Because all the agitation and angst in the world isn't going to change the fact that Ratts is our coach for at least another season.

No we are 4 points ahead of them and they lost to Richmond today so its all relative - we beat the tigers by 20 and people were hysterical - imagine if we had of lost to them

I dont think he is any better than ratten but gee he gets a free ride here as if he is the next big thing compared to our guy.

If we were going for another coach it would be thompson roos or malthouse - they are the guys with the consistent track record but not sure we are a chance for them

Im happy to watch Hawthorn Essendon* lose and make it easier for us to get into the 8 and get finals experience - it doesnt wallpaper over the cracks and the issues we face but does assist us going forward

imagine how far ahead we would be if we had a coach that would structure and organise us???

If someone told you before the season started that we would lose two times to the Bombers.. and after round 17 we would be 4 points ahead in the race for the finals.. youd say "BULLSHIT BUDDY!!!".... betchya!

yes agree Synbad about losing twice to the bombers but maybe I wouldnt have thought we would have murdered the dogs - beat the Lions in Brisbane - beat collingwood - lose to Hawthorm by 4 after fev hit the post on the last kick of the day - lost to the only unbeaten team by 9 points - be 7 th at the end of round 17 - win 3 games in a row for the first time since 2004

People are forgetting this is only his 2nd year in the top job. He would have learned so many things just this year alone. Yes he has been out-coached a few times this year. But lets look at the positives. Beat the doggies, beat the lions twice, got as close as anyone to beating the saints. 5 weeks remaining and we are well positioned for a finals spot. Seriously lets have some faith and support. I think he's doing as good a job as anyone could have done right now.
