we just had to hope one of the big guys could snag a mark , maybe a fev or maybe a kreuzer but then our kicking has been bad so maybe one of our below the knee players can get one

that was our strategy

I was when I wrote that. It is exactly how most of the posts in this forum sound to me when I try to read them. Going on and on about the same things that are all bleeding obvious.

Do not blame the players here. Our coach is pathetic.

Mick is a very good coach.

It's no disgrace to be outcoached by the man who steared the Pies to an eighty point win over Geelong last year.

Malthouse outcoached Knights the last time they met.

Eade too...

It was the Pies night and they were on, but they're still no closer to a flag than Carlton.

Collingwood were a shit truck after half time.

The Cats, Dogs and Saints would have rolled right over the top of them.

Ratten has coached less than fifty games.

Carlton fell down because we didn't run hard enough and our good players didn't hit their targets.

I hate saying this, but Scotland shouldn't play for Carlton again.

The Blues should swab Scotland and see if he has the same disease as Stevens.

Russell ran harder and went in harder than Scotland.

Please bring in Robinson, Walker and Browne who at least have a crack and a go.

When they're ready...

Our players are still very young and developing.

If you take out Scotland, Fisher and Houlihan who won't be there in two years, our only experienced players of note would be Judd, Thornton, Carrazzo and Fevola.

No Waite and Walker who give us run and carry like Bower hurts us.

Our senior group doesn't compare favourably to the likes of St Kilda, Geelong, Footscray and even Collingwood.

We're pumping up Gibbs, Kreuzer, Bower, Murphy and Betts, but they're just 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 years of age.

Hampson, Grigg, Joseph, Yarran and Austin need more time.

I hardly noticed Gibbs.

I thought Murphy was poor.

Murphy should be in the middle and not chasing kicks by chasing a handball receive off half back like Camporeale.

Or Stevens.

Not your night if Kreuzer couldn't even clunk a mark.

How dare you bring some thoughtful, reasoned , and intelligent analysis to this thread. It has no place here. Next you will be saying something like being on the brink of playing finals with a no name Coach and a bunch of kids is some sort of success.

So many things went wrong tonight this thread could survive until Xmas.

Actually thought Ratts resembled Peter Sellers tonight.
He seemed to be in charge of a bountiful amount of Birdie Num Nums who
basically just played dumb footy for most of the night.

Have to agree with earlier comment about Lappin's 3/4 time interview.
Dont think it did ANY of the coaching staff any favours.

Thought some of the backs really did a serviceable job.
Bower, Thornton and Joseph (what a find) could hold their heads high.

A few couldnt though.....
Mr Hartlett, enjoy your time at Vermont next year.
Mr Bentley, enjoy your time at Mt Isa.
Mr Fisher, please give Ratts the negatives back.
Mr Hampson, its oval shaped, its usually red and often bounces
in funny directions, get used to it in a hurry, or Mr Mckenna will be your coach.

We just cant seriously expect to be jousting with regular finals sides
with some of the spuds listed above getting regular games.
Our A graders just simply cant carry them for 120 minutes.

One of the biggest disappointments for me on the night, was to see
us dominate most of the second quarter, and then in the third do pretty
much exactly the same thing with the same dumb mistakes, mystifying.

And our (saving grace) a decent percentage took a Lloyd-esque dive.

a positive - i got free tickets to the saints v dogs game.

will be good to watch a decent game of footy.

for all the plonkers out there who think they are a chance, give it a rest.

there are three teams that can win the flag this year, and they are all currently sitting 1-3. outside of that, the rest are poo..

seriously, i dont know what collingwood fans witnessed in that game, but if they think they are even half a chance comes finals they are deluded.

the 3rd quarter, was probably the worst display of football by two sides i have ever seen.

near 20 mins without a single point scored, and it was bad disposal after bad disposal with a bad decision by the umps thrown in for good measure. played a 25m quarter with a total of 4 scoring shots on goal. 4.

neither side was great tonight - i had collingwood slightly ahead, simply for the fact i thought they played the smart brand of footy. they players always positioned themselves on the inside of play, allowing them to chop of a kick or the spoil easily ... and we didnt correct it once.

has to be said

bentley - gone
scotland - gone
stevens - gone
hartlett - gone
edwards - gone
hadley - 50/50 a squad player at best, if not gone.
houlihan - 50/50 is a squad player
fisher - 50/50 is a squad player
russel - 50/50 s a squad player
carrazo - 50/50 is a squad player

so there are 10 players, right of the top of my head that we need to replace as they arent good enough footballers to be in our starting 22. you cant make 10 changes in a year, so we need to cut deep this year, and still move forward.

i would entertain a trade for fev as well. swans first round pick, second round pick, and jess white :) done deal :)

jess white FF - like he played against
Kreuzer CHF

and build our forward line around that, rather than the bomb to fev and hope. im not blaming fev for tonights loss, i just think we still play to him far to much :)

Totally agree with u DB in the end we could not hit an elephant with a shotgun in a flowering minivan!

I honestly believe we were the better team tonight we just did not click, fumbled and turned over the pill on way too many occasions which cost us the game. If we stayed composed and used the footy better we would have won.

The filth did not win ... we just gave it to them gift wrapped!

So by that logic the Swans gave us last weeks game on a silver platter...???? how can you be the better side and lose by 9 goals? I'd prefer we were the worst side and lost by 9 goals at least then you had room to improve...how to improve when ur the better side and get flogged.... :sly:

We were still in it at three quarter time ... they had a few lucky goals (3) we hit the post (3 times)... granted we hung our heads after they kicked the first couple and thats why the blowout occurred but if it was not for our poor disposal we would have burried them. We played woefully bad tonight and they were on simple as that.

The filth are not that good and they will be found out in September .. I am not saying we do not have a way to go but we are better than them ... we had one of those days today but I would back our boys if they were on against the current filth team if they were on as well.

I just do not rate them and think we are much better. Saying that if we played like we did tonight Melbourne could beat us even if they were tanking!

As for last week ... we clicked in the second half, I was honestly waiting for that to happen tonight ... we just played crap for 4 quarters ... if we had 1 good quarter of the sort of football that we know we can play we would have won. Instead we played tripe all night and were still in it untill the final quarter ... 9 goals was a joke in the end ... we just gave up ... really summed up the night in general.

To be honest the way we played tonight we should have been 10-14 goals down going into the final quarter. Reminded me a lot like the Freo game in Perth ... played crap for 3 quarters came good in the last and won. Could have almost done it tonight but there was no spark anywhere. Just one of those days where the ball bounces the wrong way etc etc.

Mind u I am not saying all is well and la de da just saying we are better than Collingwood but boy do we need a good hard look at ourselves and not being able to be switched on for such a huge match.

To my eyes there were three clear reasons for the disaster -

1. Disposal by foot. This is not easy to fix as very few players improve markedly once they are in the AFL. Russell, Murphy, Carrots are players who had poor kicking skills when they started and have made minimal improvement. Gibbs is normally a good kick but was diabolical last night. Yarran attempted a pass over about 12 meters and missed the target. Johnson was recruited mainly due to being an elite kick; it's a myth.

2. Stuffing around with the ball. To me the reason we were outnumbered up forward all night is because when we get the ball backward of centre we either kick it backwards or handball it to players who are flat-footed. We take forever to move it on. Virtually no-one on the team runs flat-out forward (bring back Armfield?). What were Collingwood doing while we were messing around? They had one ot two players sheep-dogging our players whilst the rest headed to our forward line to set up the zone and get in front of Fevola.

3. Running away from the ball-carrier. So frustrating to watch. Why do we allow the opposition to waltz forward unchallenged. Presti took 3 bounces at one stage then gave it to Beams who was running alongside. Presti had got it in the back pocket and beams delivers into their forward line from near half-forward. Someone has to put some pressure on.

"We had our opportunities and did we play well? No, we didn't play that well. We got beaten at stoppages early, but then we had this little window when we were grinding away, but we couldn't get any reward," he said. "Then we lost Johnson early in the last quarter and we just ran out of puff in the end."

Further to my previous, here is a quote from Nathan Buckley article in the Age today about Rich.
Kicking in general has become an interesting issue in our game as the run-and-carry offence, based primarily on handball, has become more prevalent. When teams started defending dangerous space with zones, long kicking to a numbers' disadvantage became a poorer attacking option. So much so that the public perception of the importance of kicking seems to have diminished as we saw more handball than ever before.

There are, in fact, just as many kicks on average in a game today as there was in 2000. Long kicks have dropped by half and short kicks have doubled. Ball retention has been the order of the day, but I suspect this is swinging back.

As teams, such as St Kilda, continue to "press" their opposition and close down kick options with a defence closer to man-on-man accountability than the zones, the long, effective kick to advantage will become the weapon of choice.

We still don't know how to set up for this.
By the way, we took FOUR (4) (cuatro) marks inside 50 last night.
IIR, only Eddie slotted from his.

Beggars belief.

You CANNOT blame Ratten for skill errors. The players and only the players are to blame for the disgraceful kicking that was on display tonight. If you cant kick you wont get far in this business and tonight did not look like we were getting anywhere fast. The 08 premiership winning team was built around excellent kicks of the ball. Geelong are built around excellent kicks of the ball. YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO HIT A TARGET!!!!!

Whilst many are claiming that there was no forward set up (which i agree AT TIMES) there were also many times that we'd get the ball and either bomb it long to a lose Collingwood player in the goal square or to Fev who had 3 men hanging off him. Again, surely the players are smarter than this. If you see two guys on Fev kick it to the guy that should be open. ( i emphasise should)

Run. You dont win games of footy without running. Ratten cant make the boys run. If you want to get the footy you run. We did not do this. Lots of waving and pointing but not much running. Comes down to lack of effort. Everyone can run. It's weather you're willing to bust a gut to get into space. The easier option is to stand still. We did that tonight.

Basic football smarts: Shit! Wasn't it funny how Collingwood had guys front and centre at every contest. And wasn't it funny how these guys managed to get the ball at most contests.
2 on 1's: Collingwood used there second man to hold off Kreuze or Fev while the 3rd man jumped up and took an uncontested mark. We on the other hand preffered to let the Collingwood guy jump and usually allow the ball to spill to the front where a collingwood player happened to be standing(see point above)

Grigg playing a defensive role in the forward line was stupid I THINK. The guy gets alot of ball around the packs and is generally a good user. It took a hell of a long time for him to finally get put in the middle. We lacked his bigger body and ball getting ability early. Instead he was standing on the half forward line watching the game.

Fisher may kick some goals but geez his pathetic attempts at chasing are laughable. Further, his inability to read the game and thus run to the wrong positions (defensively) really hurts us....funny how its always defensively that he is a liability.

Bentley: well when Didak is on one forward line and Bentley is on the other, well i no who i am more worried about.

Pretty dissapointing effort. Who is to blame? well i dont really care as long as someone puts there hand up and something changes. Tongihts effort wont get us very far in September.

On a lighter note; loved watching bower austin and Aj....thought that they were terrific all night.

Ummmm look.. its just no good sugar coating poor coaching... shitchouse tactics and players who are not being developed.

We either have the right people there or we dont....

You cannot say by looking at our players that theyre improving tactically ... that their deficiencies are improving... or that theyre coming along...

Joey Anderson would be a super player at collingwood... they have players like him doing playing great roles...

We just cant seem to bring them along...

... and the side is always looking lost in the heat of a battle...

but sure... we can kick back and watch the last half of last weeks game...... dont watch the first half mind you....

In my opinion we have the raw talent... what we dont have is the key to extract the best out of them....

our kids are treading water... or sinking.... and our senior players are struggling...

so the questions need to be asked................

Great post

Two best posts I have read.
Also
We have kept players that arnt up to it.
Our list is still very thin
Hartlett is a good example
And yet we still make the same mistakes
I wouldnt delist Armfield but to give him a 2 year contract based on his peformances is stupid.
We were soft as butter
Grigg
betts
Hartlett put your head over the ball shi

special mention to Chris Yarran

I have never seen a softer player

Now why was he brought in for Gartlett
was it because he was a number 6 draft pick
I respect the rodents ants reports.
Yarran didnt deserve a game on his efforts there
Absolutely pathetic and didnt deserve a game in the first place.
But this club rewards shit efforts because we make stupid selection decisions and want to be proved right that we selected Yarran over Rich.
Thatwhy Yarran was picked folks
If any player dishes up that weak footy they should be dropped.

make no mistake about it most of the players wait for Judd to lift us
exceptions being
Joseph
Bower
Simpson
Thornton played well tonight
Gibbs.\, Kreuzer Murphy in platches although as one post said they don run hard the other way.
Judd looks spent courtesy of a long year and carrying the team.
When things go bad most of our players turn up their toes.

Absolutely weak as piss.

Hey Keogh remember that Yarran is only 18yo.
He isn't our only forward that struggled last night.

No your missing my point
He avoids body contact
He doesnt want to get hurt.
Its embarassing
He also doesnt chase
How many times have we heard or read that he is young.
Thats no excuse for not copping a hit for the team.
Go to the ants section and read over the reports.
I reckon he has got away with it because of skill
He shits himself when the ball is near him and he is going to get body contact.

I just hope your name isnt Brett ratten.
