I don't think we'll make the top 4. We don't deserve to, at any rate. We've dropped too many winnable matches to here and cruelled our own chances of that.

To be honest, it might be good to finish 5-8 anyway, and be bowled out early, for a couple of reasons.

• Putting finals experience into players like Murph, GIBBS, Kreuz, Eddie with less pressure than the expectations that a top-4 finish would provide;

• Geelong and St Kilda are so dominant this year, we'd be better off having a harder run at the big one next year.

I reckon if you make finals you go full bore and try and win each final...you never know what may happen....the saints may get jittery and we all know Geelong are prone as well. Despite the difference in wins between St kilda Geelong and the rest I would say the comp is more even than you think.

Yeah, fair point.

As much as I'd like it to happen, I don't see it coming true.

Still.....lots of footy to go before the big one.

All this talk is very excititing, but let's just take it one week at a time, let's make the 8 first before we talk about home finals and top 4.

Btw whoever wrote that list about what the 4th placed team has faced in recent years, I don't think matching an undefeated saints team is ideal

Seems there's lotsa "Nervous Nellies" out there...

Understandable I s'pose given how long it's been since we've seen any September action.

My reading of our remaining games goes like this:

Coll - W
Nth - L
Geel - W
Port - L
Melb - W
Adel - W / L / D???

I think it will all come down to Round 22. Too hard to pick that one.

As for beating the Cats, I don't think they're as invincible as we all think and we seem to step up against strong opposition. It's kinda like we can only be bothered to bring out our "A" game on special occasions.

Losses to Nth and Port.. well they're just losses we gotta have. (See "A" game explanation above)

If we play a final interstate, say goodnight. It's not gonna happen.

If we manage to get one at the MCG, we're a BIG chance regardless of who we play....

..i reckon it's a safe-ish assumption to think out of the next 6 games, we should win 3 or 4.. ..that should see us get some finals action this year.. ..on the even'ness of the ladder, 4 wins and percentage could see us rise higher on the ladder sure.. ..we're 7th now, with 6 games to go and just 1 game behind the 3 teams above us, but with the better percentage.. ..we play two of those teams starting with pies and ending with crows.. ..4th to 7th is wide open i reckon..

Shows you how much we've had the stuffing knocked out of us...

We've been in the 8 for all but one week? is that right?

And only at round 16 can we say F?

I think we will have to fall in a big heap to miss the 8. Thanks to our percentage we could win as few as 2 matches and possibly sneak in. You have to remember 8th is mid-table in a 16 team comp, so the logical win-loss for that position is 11-11. Obviously the tankers down the bottom of the ladder can inflate this, but surely to no more than a 12-10 record for 8th.

This is my crystal ball outlook

Collingwood - Loss
North - Win
Geelong - Loss
Port - Win
Melb - Win
Adelaide - Loss

Obviously things can change, I could easily see us beating the Pies and Adelaide, as I could see us losing to North and Port. Point is we are inconsistent and not good enough to string large amounts of wins together, but I think we will be playing finals footy.

The Melbourne game is completely unloseable as they play Freo in Round 20 and will win that to take them to 4 wins!

If we beat Collingwood, we are almost certainly in the 8 and looking dangerous for top 4.

Finishing 4th and playing the Saints at the G/Etihad is a pretty good deal when you compare it to finishing 4th in recent years.

2006 - Travel west to play the Eagles at Subi
2007 - Play Geelong who were unbeatable
2008 - Again Geelong who were almost unbeatable
2009 - Saints who we pushed to 9(?) points and probably should have beaten

Somehow slip in to 4th, and there is a massive opportunity to roll the Saints and enjoy a week off before the Prelim :smoking:

4th spot has never looked so good.

Ha ha! Love your optimism mate......

It's simply. Win two games and we'll qualify, this round has been a blessing on many levels.

Port, Bombers and Hawks all need 4 wins from 5 games in the home stretch to finish above us due to our percentage difference.

Good news is the Bombers play the Hawks and Saints, and the Hawks play the Saints, Port and Bombers so one of those teams if finished.

Port play Hawthorn and Brisbane away, even if they beat us percentage is our friend.

Carlton vs North = WIN
Carlton vs Geelong = LOSS
Carlton vs Port = LOSS
Carlton vs Melbourne = WIN
Carlton vs Adelaide = LOSS

Essendon* vs West Coast = WIN
Essendon* vs Brisbane = WIN
Essendon* vs St Kilda = LOSS
Essendon* vs Fremantle = WIN
Essendon* vs Hawthorn = LOSS

Hawthorn vs Port = WIN
Hawthorn vs St Kilda = LOSS
Hawthorn vs Adelaide = WIN
Hawthorn vs Richmond = WIN
Hawthorn vs Essendon* = WIN

Port vs Adelaide = LOSS
Port vs Hawthorn = LOSS
Port vs Fremantle = WIN
Port vs Carlton = WIN
Port vs Brisbane = LOSS
Port vs North = WIN

LADDER:

7 - Hawks 12wins 48pts 98% (approx)
8 - Blues 11wins 44pts 105% (approx)
Tigers - Bombers 11wins 44pts 101% (approx)
10 - Port 11wins 44pts 94% (approx)

That % will only be 105% (approx) if we dont cop a floggin by Geelong and Adelaide.

Also been thinkin,,,,,,,,,,,, whats everyones thought on,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, would you want to make finals only to be beaten by more than 100 pts in the first week of finals. Are we better off to miss finals, which SHOULD make the team more hungry for success or is better to be beat by 100pts and put it down to experience ?????

Countered by flogging Melbourne and North.

Run it yourself on the AFL website.

How many times have we been flogged by 100 points this year?
